With Rust's switch to 1:1 threading (soon to be not even optional AFAIK), how will this affect the concurrency capabilities of Rust-based web servers, and servers in general?

I don't know Ceylon, but because it targets JVM/JS VMs, it's not suitable as a systems programming language - which Rust is especially useful for.

The's some pretty big maintenance drawbacks to AWD though. If you blow out a tire, you have to replace all four.

How this works depends on the department that's funding the research. With NSF/NIH grants, it's at the desecration of researchers on whether they want to apply IP rights. Other departments (mostly DoD) do contracts for resear

There's a couple bugs in the sample code: `is_thirties` won't compile because it's missing a type declaration, and the `person` function should be called `first_name`.

Python 3 did address concurrency with the asyncio package. What it hasn't addressed is parallelism.

I'd love to see evidence of that. I did some testing of the effects of websockets vs polling for iOS and saw negligible effects.

You need to expose a hypercall interface for this. Can anyone explain how that would be implemented, and does it restrict the kinds of kernels you can write? e.g. can I create a unikernel or microkernel with this?

Yeah. I'd be curious to know how much of that is a product of the software/hardware architectures we currently use, e.g. programming languages generally not built from the start with parallelism in mind.

Current game engines are still bound by the single-threaded game loop model, although not by necessity. Here's a really cool presentation about it: https://www.st.cs.uni-saarland.de/edu/seminare/2005/adva

Moore's law is about the number of transistors, not clock speed. "The number of transistors incorporated in a chip will approximately double every 24 months." - Gordon Moore: http://www.intel.com/content/

This is a straw man argument. Async doesn't have to look like node.js' callback hell - that's what go, erlang and several other languages achieve with M:N green threading.

Note that you not only have to worry about FFI bindings with this sort of architecture (as mentioned in the article), but also blocking syscalls as it'll freeze all the other processes running on the thread. You end up having to re-inv

This is a good thing, it's a sign the industry is moving fast and hopefully in the right direction. Constant self-reflection keeps us on our toes.

We're working on switching from Heroku to EC2. To my knowledge there isn't a lot of documentation out there on this process - we're just looking for code snippets to figure out how to build AMIs, deploy, etc. It's a slow

I'm a fan of pilbox [1]. It's "fast" (builds off of OpenCV + Tornado), easy to understand and does much more than just image resizing. Also, it should be simpler to deploy than OpenRoss - since it doesn't bake in ng

What's wrong with node? npm is a very polished package manager, and I'm frankly surprised how infrequently libraries with native bindings fail to build.

NYC and SF aren't comparable at all since NYC is so much larger. But even then, NYC is more well-organized. The majority of the services you mentioned move commuters between NYC and surrounding areas, so it makes sense that they don&#x
