I have a prediction: 20 years from now we'll look back at articles like these and think "wow those were stupid predictions," in the same way that we look back at those Popular Mechanics articles from decades past that foresaw pill food and

The last time I saw a post like this on HN, I replied that both idea and execution are important, with a contrived example. The creativity of the responses made me rethink my stance. http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1404428

Why does everyone insist that there will be a next Java? Maybe the programming language ecosystem is getting less homogenous.

Not that I agree, but the carrier does not wish or intend to become a pipe. The carrier wants to be vertically integrated, where it controls the entire mobile user experience. iPhone and Android have chipped away at this concept pretty quic

There is a subtle sense of superiority in this comment over people who simply want a job. Which is ironic given your identification of the disrespect people have toward the full-time hacker.

Antitrust law provides some interesting insight into the question IMO. It was established because laissez faire economics failed to prevent monopolies. Instead, a carefully crafted regulation supported capitalism. I think true capitalism ca

Yes, I'm sure it is (for some definitions of faster) and isn't (for others). No benchmarks, no comparative NoSQL code, and the example is trivial. There's nothing interesting here.

Maybe there's more to come, but not much more. It's purposefully bare bones. When I was writing some canvas-based games, everything I looked into felt too heavyweight. Processing.js uses its own DSL. Akihabara was just overwhelming. This is

Yes, I sort of regret calling it canvas.js but it's a bit late now. I will add information on how to compile coffeescript.

Because the actual canvas API is more limited in what it can do. Basically this was designed to be a lot like processing, without the special DSL; you write your applications using just javascript/coffeescript.

I think the author misses the biggest reason why lisp never caught on: too many developers are simply aversive to s-expressions. Maybe Clojure, with its slightly richer syntax, will solve this.

I don't have any experience with Scheme, but the argument was on whether a GUI written in Scheme would be unacceptably slow. A synthetic benchmark measuring AFAIK mostly number crunching suggests nothing about GUI performance.

Right, which is why they're executive orders :) Guantanamo is in a half-state because Congress invoked NIMBY with the attempts to prosecute detainees in the US. No other country wants to take them in.

There is the TANGENT algorithm: http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~zha/CSE8801/CF/p657-onuma.pdf Applied to a social graph, it would (hypothetically) find content that is both recommended by friends and probably new to you.

Surprisingly pleasant. I'm a big fan of the hashmark URL updates. It's a subtle feature but its necessity becomes glaringly obvious when trying to share google maps results.
