And the "vote down" button should be removed until the voter has commented on the post. Getting fed up seeing worthy comments down-modded without explanation.

"Ideas are not worthless." Yes they are. They only become valuable when you work on them and make them into something people find useful. You can have a brilliant idea and watch it die on poor implementation and marketing, and a crumby one

I want a HUD integrated into VR goggles with a GPS system so it can act as sat nav for people who are walking and cycling, etc. It could also allow you to meet with people who aren't physically there, but merely "there" online. You would se

That was better than I thought it would be. The bit about manager's saying "I want a pony!" really resonates with me. My latest project caused me immense problems because I got one damn long shopping list from the client's head honcho, who

I fail to see the point of this. Geeks are not a distinct breed of people and it feeds into second-rate, misleading stereotypes to suggest they are.

7-year old article, although that doesn't invalidate it. I think what does is that web development (particularly using frameworks) is much more tractable and probably more lightweight than creating an office suite or operating system.

"If tomorrow nothing changed (let's say!) except that macs had 80% market share, would mac fans be just as fanatic?" There is (possibly) a genuine reason for that. Macs have a culture which tends to be shared by people who use them. You can

Why not start off with how to use Blueprint CSS ( http://code.google.com/p/blueprintcss/ ) and then show how to extend it? Blueprint gets the basics very right indeed, and allows your readers to become productive quickly. Then you can move

www.novacaster.com is a CMS I coded from scratch in Perl, in 1999-2000. I was told by my boss it would be released as open source, but that never happened. When I left the job, he told me he would be "retaining full rights to the Novacaster

I spent a long time looking for a decent, free text editor. I eventually found two: Komodo Edit and Text Wrangler. The only reasonable terminal program is iTerm, although I'd give it up to get a Mac port of PuTTy.

Use Django for any web publishing app - blogs and news sites are its real strength. I'm using Django for what I would consider edge cases (eg building on-line databases) and it's not a perfect fit, although I think it will work. If you lear

It's not really possible to introduce a Surowiecki-style "Wisdom of the Crowds" model to online news sites. In his book, James Surowiecki is very specific about what makes for a good "WOTC" poll, and what doesn't. In particular, he mentions
