I've never actually encountered an employer who set job offer salaries to reflect where remote candidates live. People point that out as a benefit to companies hiring remote employees (it'll save them money!), but does that actually happen?

I find math in some cases to be really hard to Google. Particularly with expressions that I don't know the names of; I never know what to use as search terms.

Good numbers industry-wide are difficult to come by (but getting better), but according to the latest DBIR‡ (which, full disclosure, is put out by my former employer) breaks it down as 98% external, and 4% internal (why that adds up to grea

While this definitely used to be the case (we used to find ~80% of incidents were internal employee issues), for the past four or five years we've seen that ratio change (not so much because the internal issues went down, but more because o

It was an offer letter, not an application; and was sent to me on a Friday, and needed to be returned the same day (and I didn't have access to a printer).

It might have just been filled out on a tablet. When I had to fill out all my job paperwork for my new job, I used pdfpen on my iPad for everything, and it looks like it was written by a toddler in crayon.

If forced to decide between Dustin's reality and Moxie's, I think I'd chose Dustin's. A world made up of overly-reviewed, pretentious gadgets slightly edges out a utilitarian, post-apocalyptic, hellscape Bartertown where people scavenge thr

Your comment implies that you think that content/experience is orthogonal to a diverse speaker group. I strongly disagree. I think a diverse speaker group leads to overwhelmingly better content and experience. I think this extends much furt

I mentioned this in the other thread about Build and Analyze, but I listen to ~ 40 hours of podcasts a week. I listen to them mostly when I get home from work (maybe 3 or 4 hours a night), and then usually a bunch of marathon sessions on th

The thing I find myself hating about all of these anti-Facebook rants is that they all seem to operate under the assumption that Facebook has "subsumed" all of this functionality from the internet at large, which seems spectacularly false.
