Recently implemented a fixed-size memory pool with spinlocks and now I'm wondering - how would one implement them without a spinlock? Edit: Maybe I'm confusing terminology. What I'm doing is looping until other threads return

That's not happening for a similar reason people do not bug-check every single line of every single third-party library in their code. It's a chore that costs valuable time that you can instead spend on getting the actual stuff do

The vast majority of papers is so insignifcant, nobody bothers to try and use and thereby replicate it.

Bibtex are often also incorrectly generated. E.g., google scholar sometimes puts the names of the editors instead of the authors into the bibtex entry.

Oh nice, that's good to know. Yes, those clones sites are also instantly on my block list, as well as Userbenchmark, sites with AI-generated "info" pages (if I want AI answers, I'll just ask ChatGPT), sites that won'

I'm rooting for Kagi solely because the block feature. It's amazing to be able to block undeservedly SEO'd garbage sites from future search results.

Same here! Easily jumping between files is one of the best features. I always have VS and vscode open simultaneously, doing about 99% of the work in vscode and only using VS to compile and to debug.

I've also used Eclipse in the past but almost exclusively used vscode in recent years. It's just a phenomenal text editor. It's got fantastic multi-line selection and editing tools and searching for files is instant and you d

ChatGPT learned to use em dashes from somewhere. They were widely used before LLMs.

I don't know the details since I'm mainly a windows dev, but when porting to linux, TBB has always been a huge pain in the ass since it's a suddenly additionally required dependency by gcc. Using C++ and std::thread.

I'm still confused as to why linux requires linking against TBB for multithreading, thus breaking cmake configs without if(linux) for tbb. That stuff should be included by default without any effort by the developer.

Not on Oled issue but I've noticed that vscode fonts appear much sharper than visual studio fonts. It's subtle, but just enough to make me dislike looking at code in visual studio.

Some of the comments in these links are hilariously elitist. They are actively embracing a hostile environment, especially towards newcomers, but how do they expect to grow and maintain a community when they are scaring users away?

Thing is, if that's how you are greeted at stackoverflow, then you'll go elsewhere where you're not treated like an idiot. Stackoverflow's decline was inevitable, even without LLMs.

The high memory usage is due to the optimization. Responsiveness, robustness and performance was improved by making each tab independent processes. And that's good. Nobody needs 80 tabs, that's what bookmarks are for.

Last time I tried, modules were a spuriously supported mess. I'll give them another try once they have ironclad support in cmake, gcc, clang and Visual Studio.

"using namespace std;" goes a long way to make C++ more readable and I don't really care about the potential issues. But yeah, due to a lack of a nice module system, this will quickly cause problems with headers that unload e

Terrible for atomic functions where you are often only interested in atomically writing something, but not interested in the return value they also provide.

I'm not a fan of nodiscard because it's applied way too freely, even if the return value is not relevant. E.g. WebGPU/WGSL initially made atomics nodiscard simply because they return a value, but half the algorithms that use

Only when it comes to graphics/art. When it comes to LLMs for code, many people do some amazing mental gymnastics to make it seem like the two are totally different, and one is good while the other is bad.

People were against steam engines, tractors, CGI, self-checkouts, and now generative AI. After some initial outrage, it will be tightly integrated into society. Like how LLMs are already widely used to assist in coding.

Most OS licenses requires attribution, so AI for code generation violates licenses the same way AI for image generation does. If one is illegal or unethical, then the other would be too.

Different features/architecture is precisely the issue with mobile, be it due to hardware constraints or due to lack in deiver support. Render passes were only bolted into Vulkan because of mobile tiler GPUs, they never made any sense

Also pipelines and bindings. BDA, shader objects and dynamic rendering are just way better than the legacy Vulkan without these features.

I'm having a hard time taking an API seriously that uses atomic types rather than atomic functions. But at least it seems to be better than Vulkan/OpenGL/DirectX.
