Philosophy of science is very relevant and more difficult than ever. But you couldn't do philosophy of quantum mechanics before the science of quantum mechanics. When I say philosophy I mean metaphysics or in general attempts to explai

Multiverses as a result of space receding faster than speed of light are pretty much universally accepted. Other kinds are more controversial. There are galaxies not co-existant with us in the future that are now.

Large areas of philosophy are routinely demolished by the strangeness revealed by science. Concepts like Time after general relativity, the reach of maths after Godel, existence being coexistence after the discovery of multiverses. Philosop

She comes to understand she cannot change it, yet from her point of view, she decides to call the Chinese. And she chooses, from her point of view, when she tells her husband. She does actions that would have been impossible without knowle

She can act on the knowledge of the future. She could have decided not to have the child right? The same as she decided to act to stop the Chinese. It's very inconsistent to argue she had to have the child and that he couldn't hav

Greg Egan. If you like solid science there's just nobody at that level. Chiang would be if he wrote more.

Agreed, he's one of the best sci-fi writers. He's got the rigor and imagination of Greg Egan but he's a much better writer and his characters are better defined. For me, the perfect combination. If he wrote more he'd be

In the book she has no choice, knowing the future doesn't allow you to change it, it's deterministic. Free Will doesn't exist. In the movie they went out of their way to make it clear the future can be changed, and she does c

Science researches problems that are deemed important, and funding of those problems should be proportional to the importance of the problem. Death I argue is one of the most important problems of all so research on how to cure it should be

Are you eliminating execution risk? with these exchanges and this liquidity I wouldn't be surprised if your algo slips and actually loses money on the attempted executions on the arbitrage prices. Isn't that too dangerous to claim

In fact, service in those countries is much better than in the US. I would even say that if there's a correlation between tipping and quality of service at the country level, is negative.

Yes exactly, it would be interesting to see fair comparisons of people of the exact same profile (both driver and car) tesla vs others. I don't like that so many people seem happy enough to compare autopilot against the total average o

Because of security. I wouldn't buy an autonomous car that has an accident rate worse than my demographic. A car that has an accident rate better than average is not good enough. I hope that explains my point.

I think there's sometimes a lot of marketing and hand waving in this type of argument "crashes go down with autopilot". Most car accidents are caused by drunk or old people, and they drag the average up. if you tell me a Tesl

Very interesting and well written post. I own a lot of boardgames and follow the hobby in BGG, YouTube, etc. There are a bunch of famous game reviewers in YT that bring sales if they like a game but to be honest I think they won't like
