What really gets me about AI space is that it’s going the way of front-end development space. I also hate the fact that Facebook/Meta is the only one seemingly doing heavy lifting in the public space. It’s great so far but I just don’t

Sam is basically a marketing person at this point. If you have the chops to be a leading AI dev, then you likely don’t need or want someone like him to skim a big chunk off of top.

Guess I will heat my basement with 5090 this winter. 3090 was one of the best purchases I have ever made. Mined ETH to pay for itself within two months. Then came all the AI fun. Can’t think of anything that was as useful in my life.

I always looks at these prices and think it’s a complete rip off for anyone doing less than 4 GPUs.

If you want to see the power of monopoly in action, look at the enterprise market and how Intel is able to hold market shares despite their inferior products. Some corporates still blindly buy Intel.

Because it won’t help subpar coders and “100x” types have moved into AI. Meaning, they’re the ones building the tools.

I lived a couple of houses down from her Cambridge home. Was a big fan of hers growing up so it was a nice treat to shop at Savenor’s as an adult.

I am building something similar to Grammarly as a personal project but quickly realized how hard it is to get data in 2024. Contemplating whether I should just resort to pirated data which is just sad.

We live in a world where iPhones get shipped directly from China. I know this is pretty much conspiratorial but if China wanted to hack a bunch of iPhones in the hands of government officials, there’s nothing to stop them. This episode made

Off topic but why do people run Plex and movies locally in 2024? Is “iTunes” that bad?

I have a similar approach but I don’t use ZFS. It’s a bit superfluous especially if you’re using your storage periodically (turn on and off). I use redundant NVMEs in two stages and periodically save important data into multiple HDDs (cold

I like him but his food is just a white-person’s version of Korean food. It’s not a bad thing but his food lacks soul and this is reflected in everything he does.

That last part is often overlooked. This is also why sometimes it’s just not worth going local especially if you don’t need all that compute power beyond a few days.

My reason for going Epyc was for Pcie lanes and cheaper enterprise SSDs via U.3/2. With AM5, you tap out the lanes with dual GPUs. Threadripper is preferable but Epyc is about 1/2 of the price or even better if you go last gen.

This is something people often say without even attempting to do a major AI task. If Mac Studio were that great they’d be sold out completely. It’s not even cost efficient for inference.

People make such a big deal out of this and rightfully so but Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan did the same thing for years. At least Niccols is successful at running a major company (strictly) from an investment perspective. Moynihan did

US pharma already benefits from academic research which is paid for by tax money. This is a classic example of socializing the costs and privatizing the profits. Often times, you’re looking at 10-100x the cost for “statistically significant
