Python is certainly the more flexible of the two languages, but if you're really familiar with PHP you may be able to write your app faster in it and get it out there faster. But there's also long-term time savings to consider as well... I

I wonder how Steve Yegge's Rhino on Rails might fit into this... http://steve-yegge.blogspot.com/2007/06/rhino-on-rails.html It would be super fun to play with a well-supported server-side JS framework. He mentioned open sourcing that co

That would be totally awesome, and you could make the case that it benefits them to have their App Engine platform become a more standardized/open framework!

It would be interesting to combine this with Google Gears for offline storage too. Tougher to create something that securely shared data between users, but for a single user this could still make some powerful apps!

The other great thing about this is that your batch script can essentially keep plugging away behind-the-scenes when the data set to process is larger (e.g. a newsletter list to send). So even if something goes wrong and the batch script f

Wow, this is awesome! Many CS grads I've worked with before had little experience of any web technologies or concepts coming out of school, which makes it that much harder to get them up to speed. I quickly realized I can't take for grant

While it's interesting to advocate companies like Yahoo, instead of being sucked up into the Microsoft fold, break themselves up into smaller, more agile firms, it seems to me that perhaps the better action for Yahoo to take would simply be

What about less code-specific books, like "Cathedral & the Bazaar"? I find my shelf ends up with a fair amount of these compared to code/code theory books. I'm also reading "Programming Collective Intelligence" right now which is prett

I'll have to think about others still (or turn around and look ;), but "Mastering Regular Expressions" (O'Reilly) really helped me many moons ago. I just bought the latest edition recently to see what's new, and to finally have a copy for

Sweet, thanks! I ended up with "The Most of PG Wodehouse" just 'cause it seemed a good place to start. Sounds like I'll be happy with it either way! From the sound of it, this'll be quite the welcome contrast to the last book I read: Jour

Haha, awesome post! Indeed, acceptance or no, hopefully we're all in this to start startups, not just on condition of YC's approval. It does sound like a totally amazing and unique experience though, and honestly what seems coolest about

From my limited understanding of art interpretation, in earlier times art was seen somewhat as an attempt to understand or mimic the world around them in order to understand it better. Now we tend to value creativity as a more important qu

Thanks for the reply, that makes total sense. I suppose CDN services should be compatible with AWS anyway, so they wouldn't be mutually exclusive. Each for its purpose :)

I keep hearing comments about AWS and latency, but I haven't used it (yet!) so I don't have any first-hand experience. I've seen that S3 can provide direct public links, but are there latency issues that make these too slow for general purp
