Good article! I think "Complete Turbo Pascal" by Jeff Duntemann had a treatment of the spirograph (might have been another book on Turbo Pascal though). Good times, good times. :)

Yes, the prefix is easier if you search from the firefox search box (ctrl-k). Also I frequently find nowadays that Goog and DDG provide very very very similar results for most queries for which I dissatisfied enough with DDG to try Goog.

You can use the DDG '!g' prefix for that. For queries which I'd like to double check with Google, I resubmit it to duckduckgo with '!g' prefix. It redirects to Google. It's a smart move by DDG to help people resist the temptation to make Go

Sorry, I just saw this. And I'm right now on Linux so I can't confirm, so I might be slightly off here. There's a setting under keyboard (or terminal, I forget). You might need to change it to 'X11R6'. Look at section 4.4.3 here: http://th

I do this. Vim + tmux rocks. One tip that Works For Me (tm) is to map the rarely-used function keys to pane and window selection commands (I hate multi-key commands :)) I've got F1/F2 mapped to cycle through panes, and F3/F4 to cycle throug

OP said: "I'm stuck on Ubuntu Natty, for example, because it has the last stable version of Compiz that worked for me on the flgrx ATI drivers." It's easy to imagine a similar problem (somebody stuck on XP because for e.g., a device driver

You want stability and a slowly-changing core system, but won't use the LTS releases? Because your app provider doesn't make updated PPA's for the LTS release. At which point you blame the existence of the distro's non-LTS releases? I think

You use debian and are complaining about old binaries? I think they consider it a feature. I use Ubuntu desktop/server and etc and my experiences with the package managers have been flawless.

I understand where you're coming from, but people have the exact same problem with Windows (and maybe Mac also; but I don't have much experience with Macs). Many people are staying on XP because they dislike Windows 7/Vista. I suspect the s

Thanks for honestly emphasizing "initiation". http://sethf.com/essays/major/libstupid.php analyzes why that qualifier renders the statement almost meaningless. I, at least, found his points convincing.

Just curious since I had a hard time doing a simple soldering project. Would it be difficult even if they had some equipment to precisely maintain temps and suck out the solder? Does such equipment even exist?

Hmm, for a customer of a cloud provider, this sort of thing will be very hard to defend against. Maybe if the customer service system had had two-factor security, this might have been avoided (i.e., customer service can access your accoun

I'd like to hear comparisons between Leveldb and Berkeley DB. I'm using LDB in my most-recent project. I wrote a trivial HTTP wrapper around it using Mongoose to make it a "server". :) I like the snapshotting feature, the support for transa
