Somehow I don't find this too surprising, Google Groups was promising many years ago, but this days it is in a rather depressing state: - Search works much worse than either inside Gmail or googling a different web archive of a mailinglist

"Real time" can mean many different things. And how "fast" and "real time" a desktop feels usually has little to do with the technically real time (or lack of thereof) of the kernel. That said, Plan 9 has an interesting implementation of re

I think Erlang is great, and have been a big fan for a long time, but as you say, it has its limitations and it is nice to have a quite different alternative with Go for concurrent systems. > Erlang, for example, is admitted as being a

Fun fact: Brad Fitzpatrick, author of the original (in C) memcached is now part of the core Go team at Google. One thing he did was write this memcached client lib that is used for Go on AppEngine: https://github.com/bradfitz/gomemcache B

Go's cross-platform portability is quite good, writing portable Go code is infinitely easier than writing portable C or C++ code, and probably as easy or more than Java.

Go still compiles to native code and provides direct control over the memory layout of your data structures. This alone makes it considerably more low level than anything that runs on the JVM.
