Ehhh, the analogy doesn't hold totally because you might not have to pay it back. In that case you're ahead. FTA: Call options are a better model than debt for cruddy code (without tests) because they capture the unpredictability

I agree with your overall statistical/singularity argument, but that's not reason enough to call a great filter nonsense. The biology of a great filter is at play along with the overall cosmological context. "Power, Sex, and

Can't speak to likelihood of discovering life on Europa but it would be fucking awesome. To be clear, microbial life in no way entails higher life. It's only by the insanely chance event of the eurkaryotic cell emerging that s

There are 100s of ex-googler startups. I've personally worked at 2 between 2008 and 2011, then went to google, then started my own ex-googler startup!

I do agree with this critique. Object allocation patterns that suck down space in a GC'ed system equally abuse a refcounting system, just you're paying in CPU time rather than memory.

GC has better throughput at the expense of significantly increased memory usage, and variable latency for any individual task. On servers, that's fine. On my phone, I'll take lower memory usage and predictable latency any day. Yay

As an intermediate Haskeller I'm curious, what's the replacement for SYB? I've worked in haskell primarily on compiler-like tree tranformation code and SYB seems to fit the bill perfectly.
