The other clear distinction to make here is that it isn't exactly Google's fight since the content that is being targeted is merely being indexed by Google not created by Google. So logically it is the content owners/creator (website owner

I don't think it is cowardly for Google to obey the law and court orders. At least they publish information about this kind of activity http://www.google.com/transparencyreport/governmentrequests/...

I very seldom find myself missing unsigned types in java. Most of the time using a BitSet or an EnumSet is probably what you want. What problem are you trying to solve that needs unsigned arithmetic?

In my investigations i did find the overhead to be fairly high and in most of my benchmarks i found that using simple fixed size fifo queues was significantly faster. However my benchmarks were generally simple cpu bound tasks you would de

I think a lot of the complaints about the AbstractFactoryFactoryProvider nonsense in many java programs is that it unnecessarily adds complexity to projects that do not require it. In the examples provided there were clear performance char

Read the article. He was talking about how you need to be able to instantly switch between implementations in the same code base. Sometimes even at run time.

Luckily these days people are designing algorithms/data structures that don't rely on DCAS :) So you can actually implement them on real hardware

I've done it. You need hardware support to do it without locks. Here is a paper describing an implementation using CAS http://www.cse.chalmers.se/~tsigas/papers/JPDC-Lock-free-ski... in order to do work stealing in general you just need

I was working with a small library that i implemented (with help) on a grad school research project. We were experimenting with various low level techniques/approaches to how one would implement an operating system for a 1000+ core chip.

cilk is definitely cool, but i don't think it makes designing parallel programs any easier, it just removes a lot of boilerplate. I have worked with similar infrastructures (not the language support) and found it to be extremely difficult.

This is just a guess but my intuition is that a company issues stock in order to raise capital. So if the company has a useful investment opportunity that would affect its long term profitability then raising the capital in equity markets

This doesn't strike me as particularly interesting. CL is just a programming language, a functional assembly so iit seems intuitive that it would be infeasible to cache all computations. Even just caching all programs up to a given size i

You assume that skimming is a primary use case. That is not how i use google reader (if there is a feed that i consistently do not want to read i unsubscribe). Maybe they were optimizing for my use case, where you read everything (or clos

This is compatable with ANSI C. Also it has a fairly large number of features, especially around non blocking data structures and memory management.

How so? China owns ~10% of US treasury bonds, which makes them the largest single holder of Treasury Bonds. This does not mean they bought anything other than a promise for repayment at a stated rate.

Government Bonds are not like equity. You could own every single Treasury Bond and still not have any claim of ownership. Obviously governments still try to appease the bond markets but that is not due to obligation, it is self interest.

sharing is already opt in on Google Reader. So you would have to click "share" and then (most likely) select a circle, there will probably be a default circle but it won't just start spamming G+ whenever you read an article

maybe we should use the stackoverflow flag concept? that way you could flag an item for being: * off topic * inappropriate/offensive * low quality or 'noise' * other (which would require a comment) then down votes could be removed entirely
