Why not Emacs? Just kidding. vimtutor will answer a lot of your questions. The kernel of the matter is the ability to do everything from the keyboard. You never have to use the mouse. That allows things to be much faster. That is a gross ov

Like I said, I have limited experience. I'm not aware of a cluster of terrorist attacks like that ever before. Correct me if I'm wrong. As a FWIW note, Wikipedia has 3 incidents between 1800-1899, 9 for 1900-1969, and markedly more after th

Ahh. That is quite true. I stand corrected. As to Jobs the control freak, I don't like it either. As to Gates the philanthropist, he has done the world a load of good.

Possibly not the threat. In my limited experience (I'm a late teen) the reality of attacks are much more real. WTC Bombing. Oklahoma City. 9/11. Those all happened in my lifetime.

You are right. Freedom of speech is hard to gauge in matters like this, really, really hard. (when is the "line" crossed, and what is the line?)

That is somewhat true. The market caps have been closing their gaps quickly, so it's not completely different. The companies are nearing equality as far as stock worth. The point is, since Steve came back to Apple, he has soundly out done G

Unfortunately in this day and age terrorism is very, very real. It is most definitely not a joking matter. Yes, it might seem to be overkill. However, overkill is much better than thousands dying because the joke was actually real.

I really like the idea of "Tantalization." The theory of put a carrot out there, and the horse will run faster. If more smart people had the carrot and being told it could be done with work, where we be today? Just think where are we becaus

You often have to wonder if browsers only get better benchmark times because the benchmark times are targeted. I.e., the brain gets faster at doing the same thing over and over again, so the programmers are tuned to getting a faster benchma

I am going to work on a new implementation of a facebook style website. Built on these core values: 1) User privacy 2) Data transferability 3) Open source software 4) Open API (for only that data that users allow, of course.) I plan to do i

Is there anything that Facebook doesn't consider "public information" anymore?

Absolutely. I like your picture of the common interactions, it really boils it down to a kernel of core functions.

As to code licensing, that will most likely be GPL or MIT, if I actually get that far.

What exactly are you trying to get at? Yes, there is something really wrong. But chalk it up as an human or computer error. In a few days when they unravel it, it'll probably be some wacky algorithmic problem, or some day-trader decided to

Facebook is disturbingly anti-user. Such hypocrisy! With one hand they build their platform on open-source tools that thrived on data sharing, and with the other they take away the basic rights of online users. I'm very close to saying forg

Facebook's open graph is seriously scary. Since I joined Facebook (circa Sept '07) I have defended their privacy standards, I thought were doing a great job, considering the shear size of the problem. Not so anymore. In the last two months,
