First you have to master the tool, or even abuse it, then you get experienced. Or, you refuse to try those advanced language features and never get experienced.

How do you know if it is a time saving abstraction or a time wasting abstraction without knowing how it works?

Ruby has many high level text operation abstractions, which is not included in most other languages. But in micro-benchmarks we need to ensure all the languages use the same algorithm, or similar code to do the job. Then the high level meth

Rich type system? Can Scala express {x|x is integer, x >= 3} as a type? ATS can. We can even transform this set into unsigned types in C/C++, but in JVM there's no primitive simple way.

Ruby is fast in non-benchmark jobs like text processing. It's not ruby slow, it's sass's implementation of dependency analysis slow. Good compilers in Ruby, like Slim is even faster than most template engines in Javascript or

Modern C/C++ compilers can detect a sub set of pure functions and do possible aggressive optimisations. There's even an `__attribute__ ((pure))` in GCC for explicit pureness.

You "scaling" is just a syntactic sugar to the underlying package/module solution. In js/coffee the syntax just don't care about it, and you use package/module with a library. Most of the semantics or environme

Language is part of the tooling. For example, if you have a language that compiles to js which always passes JSLint, then you don't need JSLint any more. Removing the need of a tool is even better than developing a tool. CoffeeScript g

There's no replacement for exceptions, but you can use setjmp and longjmp if you really want to jump out many layers of nested calls. In C11 there is type generic macros that helps writing C++-like overloaded functions. There are sever

Misleading. It's not a problem of CookieStore or Rails, it's the problem of HTTP. Changing session store to a database or memory store won't fix it: a session id is still required on the client side, then your session is stil

D is more like C++ without macro and with GC plus some engineering features (unit test is a language feature? weird). Rust looks different and does different. For example, idiomatic foreach block in Rust is a syntax sugar of passing lambda,

Conservative GC is real GC, it's just the tracing set happens to be the stack. And I don't see why you can't use non-conservative GC for C++ allocators. It only requires some work for read/write barriers. GC is all about

Using GC in C++ is rather simple, just use a GC-powered allocator and you don't need to call `delete` anymore. But GC just doesn't matter so much. Many forget-to-delete or delete-too-early problems can be solved by memory analyzer
