Last week everybody was shocked that they're going to spend $400mm/yr with Google... Now the total cloud bill is up to $600mm/yr! I can't wrap my head around these numbers.

Ah, my bad, I misunderstood. It's pretty normal for tech companies to do dozens of deploys a day, thanks to CI/CD. There are lots of ways to achieve this, but they all pretty boil down to the same idea: Boot up the new version b

Feature flags, most likely. Deploy the dual-write code behind a feature flag, enable the feature flag for a small fraction of requests, start notching up the percentage until you're at 100%, then remove the feature flag and the old si

It looks like topics are completely unmoderated—In only a cursory use I've already seen several redundant tags. It makes discovery much more painful when there are several overlapping GitHub topics for each conceptual topic.

And even for HTTP services ALB doesn't completely replace ELB. Last time I looked at it, ALB didn't integrate with autoscaling groups.

I tend to lean towards tab hoarding. I use Tab Corral to automatically close out old tabs, which works out pretty well. Rather than having to evaluate whether I still need a certain tab up, it quietly closes it after a bit, usually once I

What are "all these languages?" This is the first one I've seen. This one doesn't even seem to be meant for practical use, rather a learning exercise by the author.

Verbal agreements rarely work out. Even among well-meaning parties, it's far too easy for someone to misremember or misinterpret the agreement. If you do enter a verbal agreement, write it down in an email and send it to the other pa

According to the email I received from Yahoo this morning, the data stolen was from 2013 and contains MD5 hashed passwords. MD5 hashed passwords. In 2013. Apparently Yahoo never made it out of the 90s.

As you mentioned, this breach is from 2013, so no matter how much they've stepped up their infosec game since the last breach the damage was already done. The delay in them discovering the breach isn't that alarming either. If yo

Of course Python isn't up to the task of device drivers, but C isn't the only language that can do that. You could write a driver in Rust, which is a significantly safer language than C.
