I sent Craig an email this morning saying the same thing. I don't get why they close down the part of the website that was (mostly, I guess?) supporting people trying to get in a relationship and, I'm sure some sort of Tinder lik

I miss dejanews - anyone remember that before Google bought them? They had full search, it's a shame Google let that go. Their search went back to pretty much the beginning of net news. Does that exist anywhere anymore?

This will get downvoted but whatever. I predicted all of this a decade ago and I refused to be part of it. All my friends laughed at me and said I was crazy. Maybe I am but I don't do all that social media shit because if you don'

This is pretty cool, thanks for the intro. The funny thing is this is _almost_ what I wanted the system interconnect to evolve towards back in the early 100Mbit ethernet days. After AVB and I wandered around the valley convincing the card

That sucks, I'm sorry Matt, don't know you so it means little but I'm sorry. It really sucks that you had no warning, no time to spend in the last days. Knowing that it is coming sucks but being taken like that sucks (I'

The reason I go by luckydude is my acknowledgement that me getting somewhat wealthy is in part pure chance. I used to think I made my own luck, it was the groundwork I did that lead to Larry and Sergey wanting to hire me, it was the work I

Yeah but dating coworkers was fine back then. And flirting was OK. Hell, I was seeing 3 other woman at the same company in the same building, they all knew about each other and were fine with it [1], when my wife swooped in and decided sh

I'm old (almost 56) and retired so I'm perhaps out of touch. Have things changed this much? I just asked my wife (who I met at Silicon Graphics) to read the article and asked her if things were like that at SGI. She said no, the

The double bounce that the stock market has just done, a high run up, then a dip, then a bounce up, then it goes down, is classic and it signals a bigger drop. I'm not a pro, that's what my guy at Morgan Stanley says. So I think

This guy is one of my heroes, I could not be happier. Go him. The H&P book on computer architecture is a book that changed my life. He is like Knuth except that I understand what he says. The Knuth stuff, I get it, it's profound

I love this sort of static generator for a non-obvious (perhaps) reason: you can version control the source. I find that hugely useful when maintaining a complex site. I wrote a similar tool, years and years ago, that took what looked like

I could go into details about how they screwed us but that is perhaps a thread of its own. We bitch slapped them at the end when I finally grew a pair (after years and years of just doing whatever they wanted). If you are an Intel vendor y

As the bitkeeper guy, I'm watching this with amusement. Intel used BitKeeper for over a decade for their RTL and when they used BK things seemed fine. We did everything that Intel wanted, at one point I realized we had taken $7M of r

So I'm not a Windows expert but I've done file system work. If windows is reasonably smart it will support files with unallocated blocks. Setting the length to 8GB is not the same as writing 8GB in any reasonable file system. I&

I agree with everything you said. The defaults are just wrong, it should not have any web server at all with a default password, that's an easy software fix.

What adtac said. If I let someone have physical access to any computer I own I fully expect to be compromised. And here the issue is, as I understand it, I would have had to have left that AMT part in place with a default password. I get

This doesn't seem like an exploit to me, it seems like saying that your WIFI AP has a security flaw because you didn't change the default password from admin/admin. And it is worse than that, you have to have physical access

The fact that this is all on one cpu seems like a problem, does it not? Does someone have a mental model of how to take advantage of multiple cpus without creating a mess? If so, can you explain it like I'm 5 (or more like I'm 55
