Power losses mainly. I did 24V wiring on campers and boats, and it's ridiculous how much copper you have to put in and then still have issues with the voltage drop. 110 or even better 220V AC is just so much better in that respect. If

LEDs don't die of being at 30C. For that I saw in dead lamps/floodlights I opened I mostly wondered how this managed to even last for the time it did. The best engineering of a LED light I ever saw is still the 2013-ish era Maglit

The whole point is that pagecache does not cause any swap hits. Oh my god, it's 2023 and we're still discussing this idea from 1970s. Is that so hard to grasp? No, stuff gets evicted from the cache long before you hit the swap, wh

Russia as in its government could not give a lesser fuck about climate change if it wanted, which it can't. So no, no luck here. Forests burn, peat burns in such quantities you wouldn't believe and all those "climate research

Optically flat isn't even needed per se. You can weld metals by slipping two blocks a bit under pressure side by side just like that in standard atmosphere, and when there's some sort of low-pressure environment it just takes that

Well if you declare that anything your router can't place can not exist then yes. But in reality - no. There's a reason why people didn't already drop everything in favor of FPGAs and it's because they don't scale (

As if it's something else right now. Dealing with chat, email, phone endpoints unsuccessfully trying to pretend they are human (or not even that) is just a contemporary reality everyone got accustomized to.

When Siberia burned last year on the scale of multiplies of multiplies of whatever slivers of forest you have left in US no one gave a fcuk. This all handwringing about forest fires in US is just so meh. Get a grip, look at the big picture.

ARM owned the mobile market with ARM7 TDMI cores/socs back then. That's what allowed them to survive. Itanium on the other hand was killed by x86_64, yes.

Well I always wondered why 6502 had BCD. What was the point? I guess it was sorta fashionable back then.

The bit about 6x6 being rarer than 4x4 is just plain wrong. It's 4x4 that's almost nonexistent. That niche was taken by GAZ-66 Shishiga. EDIT: actually GAZ-66 is better as a camper because it's smaller, lighter, can handle ro

Actually, no. What is the cone made of? LDPE most likely. Soft, easily melted, easily shredded, easily burned. So a gas turbine most likely won't even notice a cone. Besides in a modern high-bypass turbofan about 80% of it would just g

Rotten eggs smell is just about everything you can get from this kind of experiment. Now if they scale it up. but at any scale that makes sense economically you can get suffocated by just about any gas you can think of. Like helium or hydro

Even the best velcro wears down, gets contaminated, etc. A large-pitch metal zipper with corresponding cloth just doesn't fail if you don't use cheap materials.
