Never goes down or causes operational headaches is something I've found SQLite excels at, plus you get all the benefit from a query-optimizing relational database, plus a hot backup is just cp the database file.

Lots of people are newcomers to the Mac. Windows uptimes (edit: especially in the workplace) are usually measured in hours. Unix uptimes are usually measured in months. Also: you see the screen go dark, versus wait for the throbber after

Yes, yes, yes. 0. Make the right kind of table. create table user_apps (user_id integer, app_id integer, primary key (user_id, app_id)); -- this does the validation for you, and (should) index the table on both user_id and (user_id,app_id

One of the major problems involved with using third-party login systems, like Facebook Connect, is exactly that: you need to make sure it's not critical (so you need your own login system anyway) and you need to make sure it's not blocking

Alternately, if you use a high-level-language like Haskell that can compile into machine code, you can rewrite something like regexp matching (like regex-tdfa[1]) and get better performance than what the stdlib gives you on some inputs. [1]

For most intents and purposes, I'd recommend using pdfTeX instead of TeX: your general output format is LCD, not paper, and Metafont renders pixel fonts, not vector fonts (because TeX's output format after all is paper, not screen). Also, I
