I’m gonna wait for Scott Manley to discuss it before I form much of an opinion.

It isn’t who was president it is who supported keeping schools closed.

I mean I suspect most people on HN have used torrent sites at least a little bit so we are already there.

No it was Covid. But one party’s dogma was to close schools and force all socialization to be online for almost two years and rather than admit it was wrong and harmful they blame phones instead.

I think the story is that this was one of the first ever prosecutions under the CFAA and they quickly realized that the fact it had taken down so many systems was an accident (there was a bug in the replication code). The prosecution was ma

I think the biggest deal with phone security is extracting E2E messages & data or local files on the phone, since most other things the government can subpoena from the service providers if they can't hack the phone. Does doing tha

TPB? No. But 1337 and rutracker definitely do basic quality control. Nothing like a private tracker but they take down things like .mkv.lnk and similar.

Yeah but most public trackers will give lots of side eye to torrents that contain an mkv that isn’t in one of those two formats.

I think that the x264 and hevc codecs are much more battle tested and a 0day for them would be worth enough that nobody would bother using it on random torrenters.

It isn't even like this is without precedent, the FORCEDENTRY NSO kit used the shitty old JBIG2 parser that Apple was shipping as its entry point despite the fact that approximately nobody was legitimately using JBIG2 in iMessage.

My mental model of this is “Apple releases new iOS with security patches -> time passes before cellebrite develops an AFU exploit -> Eventually Apple patches the exploit -> go to step 1”. By adding auto reboot Apple ensured that si

Neither have had any known BFU on the latest iOS for years. AFU is occasionally possible but most of the leaks had latest software and hardware as still protected. Powering off the phone is always still a good idea though if you can.

iOS was hackable in 2024 for certain hardware (in particular the checkm8 era phones) or for iOS versions which had known vulns at that point. Modern hardware with updates was still listed as “in research” which means “we can’t”.

Well then why hasn’t the government “discovered” CSAM on apple executives’ computers? We know that at least last year iOS users who had reasonably modern hardware and kept up with software updates were very difficult to hack on par with Gra

iOS already does both of this afaik. At least the automatic reboot part, I think the USB data functionality is disabled in some cases while locked too.

My dad’s dad died when he was 13, and this dropped his family from upper middle class to basically in poverty except for owning a fully paid off house. It radically colored his outlook on life and left him risk averse and frugal, even to th

Europe may be too far gone but hopefully the US will be OK. If there is one silver lining it is that if any of the site blocking bills get serious consideration this is basically a parade of horribles on a plate for the opponents.
