I’ve reached the point where my reviews tend to be either instant LGTM, or “please formalise the idea behind this into a design doc and submit for review to the TL forum” (I.e. a polite “I think you don’t know what you’re doing”). The usual

I believe that Sweden publishes laws as both the letter and separately the spirit. The former providing the rules, the latter what thought process led to making them that way. It might have been Norway though. One of these two.

Extremely badass but still 60Hz :( I wonder if I’ll ever find a way to drive 4k@144Hz and switch inputs without the current cable replugging ritual.

20/20 vision is a low bar though. I’m bothered by how much my vision has deteriorated since I was a teenager. The difference is obvious, as I now need to walk up to things I used to read from a distance. I’ve tested 20/20 a few we

The hype is real. But this time it’s backed by something more real than free money out of thin air.

What’s surprising to me is that usually goodwill burning happens after an acquisition or CEO/VP succession, but Reddit made a bonfire to illuminate their IPO.

I share the love of tracing. Internally at Google I sometimes stare at traces traversing hundreds of RPCs. It's about the only tool where I can very quickly go "wait, this shouldn't be the costly part" and "ugh, why

That is 100 players per server = 12.5 players per hardware thread. The linked article got 31 players per available hardware thread, but was only able to saturate part of the CPU landing at about 70 players per used hardware thread. The TPS

Ha, nice, thanks. I've never looked into this deeper than accepting the fact that it's doable. Now, if only I had the spare time to look into how did they shard the servers...

I'll just drop this factoid: Mineplex has won the Guinness World Records award on January 28, 2015 for having 34,434 concurrent players, the most on a Minecraft server at the time.

Another way to long at what’s happening in Ukraine: Russians have been destroying whatever power plants they could, except nuclear. With that one large dam they sabotaged 6000kmsq of farmland and rendered 600kmsq of land unusable/unin

There have been multiple catastrophic failures of dams, which I was writing about. The last one left about 600 square km (150k acres) flooded with major epidemiological (well, plus landmines) risk and 6000 square km (1.5M acres) of irrigati

The problem with storage is that the only method with significant production mileage is pumped hydro. This undoes a few of the stated benefits of renewables. You need to use significant land where you exterminate current nature. Catastrophi

Nah, the government can change the law. The obstacle to overcome would be the software quality. Today your driver is a hairball stuck with chewing gum to a point release of everything. In the case of a smallest change of anything it goes up

Here being HN? IMHO it’s not competing with Reddit, at most with a sub or five. It’s also different to the point of just not being a replacement. Redditors are currently mostly looking at Lemmy. Not sure it’s ready for prime time either.

As with all such sites, the value is in what you don't see: the 99.9% of input that gets silently devnulled as spam. It's terribly hard to automate away in a small-scale decentralised operation.

Cap'n Proto suffers from trying to improve upon something good enough. It's a real pity, have such a tech without org weight behind it.
