Many people put more trust in unzipping something than running untrusted code. Archives are supposed to be read only.

LDA actually works better for this in my experience. That is if assessed by the median distance to leave-one-out from the ones liked by a user in the test set.

I did a similar thing for music/movies/directors/actors using word2vec which is also a form of matrix factorization[1]. (Shameless plug) You can try it at http://rerecommender.com [1] http://www.cs.col

If C is binary or categorical, it totally makes sense to talk about confidence intervals. Why wouldn't it? You are trying to figure out if your probability output for a class is reliable for that sample.

SVM doesn't give CI either. In fact, it doesn't even give probability estimates per sample unless using Platt's technique whose probabilities don't always agree with the classifier's outputs. What I mean is a confi

If the net outputs probability of 0.9999 but lower CI is 0.4, then you don't have to trust it. With linear models you can estimate the CI from the data and mean squared error of the classifier.

Possibly unrelated: Anyone knows if confidence intervals can be estimated on probabilities for neural nets?

That would actually make sense. It might help more people see the light.

She says she was in late 20's and 125 lbs. Even if she were 4 feet tall, she would be losing massive amounts of weight. Base metabolic rate at 5' tall is > 1200 calories/day.

You would expend more than 800 calories from breathing alone at the weight of 125lb. The Base Metabolic Rate in the cited paper is still much higher than that even for people whose metabolism slowed down. Normally, it's calculated as

I think it has a lot more to do with choices than with willpower/honesty. If you choose to not have desirable food in your household, it is much easier to eat less. You won't have to strain your willpower or lie to yourself. If e

There are probably a million ways to deal with it. I haven't looked into it at all, but one way I just thought of right now is to have your own devices p2p the message among themselves with original sender's information after the

Try to get an average user to copy their private keys onto android from their adium/pidgin install... Even just using adium with other people using adium with the plugin had all kinds of usability issues for me.

I try to avoid using chatbots from major companies, because they gain way too much information about you via those means. The voice-based chatbots, as commonly implemented, have the ability to listen to everything you say. I hope Google do

Exactly. I was commenting on how those are not real examples of socialism - you can own property in Venezuela for example. North Korea is more of an example of a dictatorship than anything else.

Pretty sure it's the other way around. Communist society is the ideal state that has never been achieved. This is the ultimate goal of socialism.

Really annoyed by the tooltips for some reason in most JS visualizations. It is fairly easy to tell what the exact numbers are already. I think it would be a nice touch to make the standard error bars pop out or something else interactive.
