Can you give a specific example?

It's tricky. You need to define what "compressed sensing" is. Of course, for 10 years, anything with a hint of sparsity has had the "compressed sensing" buzzword added, even though these ideas are decades old. Man

How many startups are operating in the CS imaging area? I only know of InView. Rambus likes to sell their lensless sensor as "compressive", but it doesn't really fit.

Not a great example. Compressive imaging is (was?) a hot research area but hasn't made the transition to industry. I can think of only a single commercial product that relies on compressive sensing.

Might want to add the textbooks available at http://www.fourierandwavelets.org/ . I really like the first, "Foundations of Signal Processing", as a linear algebra centered treatment of the topic.

The author was recently on the Longform podcast [1] and discussed how this story came together. I enjoyed it. [1]: http://longform.org/posts/longform-podcast-163-matthew-shaer

What's sad about Sapp? He makes a killing and takes no damage.

You might want to look at vimception[1], an iPython plugin to use CodeMirror's vim mode inside iPython cells. It yet hasn't been updated to work with iPython 3.0. [1] https://github.com/ivanov/ipython-vimcept

I had the same habit. My typing speed fell dramatically when I first got my Kinesis, but after a week or so I was above 80 WPM again. I just noticed I still use my left index finger to type "y" on a non-Kinesis keyboard. Strange

Minor nitpicks- "Convolved" with the pixels. And the FIR filter doesn't depend on the frequency information in the adjacent pixels, but rather the intensity of the pixels. A short FIR filter must have large frequency suppor

[1, 0] and [1, 1] are linearly independent but not mutually orthogonal. Unless I am understanding what you mean by "in their space".

I agree- the Discrete Fourier Transform can be easily explained in terms of basic linear algebra. And that explanation is usually included in an introduction-level DSP book. Both Oppenheim and Proakis have a section devoted to this view-

Sure- admittedly, confusing "sparse reconstruction" with "compressed sensing" is a pet peeve of mine.

I doubt that compressed sensing will be very effective for this problem. Many of the guarantees for compressive signal recovery require incoherence between measurements- meaning each measurement is sufficiently different from the others.

I wonder how effective of a test this would be. Are the algorithmic & implementation details of the Fourier transform that important to imaging science? I would imagine that explaining the properties of the FT, it's connection to

Somewhat off topic from the article, but are there any similar tools that work with TeX files?

Checking that the determinant is below a threshold is not a valid test for conditioning. Take epsilon*Identity, for example.
