I was going to say similar about the requirement to provide the purchasers name and address for TV Licensing, but I just searched for details on when it started - certainly we had to do it back in the early '80s, and discovered that i

And isn't Googles method of anonymization simply to "blackout" the last octet of each users IP, so in many cases one wouldn't even need much in the way of additional data.

That's all standard on all the real ThinkPads (T and X series) since the IBM days. Most if not all of these models have 3 year warranty, and many with next business day on-site. Probably applies to the mobile workstation series too (us

Being ultra-portable makes it less of a chore to lug a high spec machine between the places it get's plugged in at for heavy work, and still allows lighter use on the go.

Once again a "null test" like this, completely disregards the fact that lossy codecs such as MP3 use a psycho-acoustic model to determine which frequencies can be discarded with minimal impact to what humans actually hear, and is

Yes, and on the subject of salt; a tiny pinch in a cup of coffee really does help to bring out the flavour. I've no idea about the effects on health, (probably depends on the rest of ones sodium intake) but it tastes good.

Gmail also had a big hand in the reduction of top posting, by hiding the quoted message by default (click the little '...' icon to see it). This means that replies in-line, or below quoted text are instantly hidden and then you ge

!$ is not merely the last word, but the last argument - particularly handy when it's a long path. Also love the way zsh expands these with a single tab press - great for clarity or further editing.

Search your favourite online store or ebay for "3.5mm stereo inline volume control" -- a few inches of cable with a headphone plug and socket on either end and a passive volume control between them. Simple but effective.

AAC when well encoded sounds great, but there are too many sub-par encoder implementations that just don't sound good - sometimes worse than MP3. If you're encoding AAC use either Apples encoder, or one of those from Fraunhofer:-
