In my experience, it's close to impossible (or maybe even totally impossible) to get the basics across. I have been trying with many non-programmers for years and I have followed many people who tried to become programmers. At this poi

It would probably be less painful and much better (for other reasons) to migrate to some other language. Some projects did that successfully, or are in the process of doing so. Most notably reposurgeon: https://gitlab.com/es

I am building a data visualisation software. Colors is all they are asking for and the hardest to implement in a "satisfy all constraints" way.

Apple's software is the worst when you need to configure something. Especially on iOS. Most people tend to use the default because usually they can't find, let alone configure the settings.

Neither 800LoC nor ~5kLoc qualifies as a large codebase. In my experience sh*t starts to get real when you go beyond 30-50kLoC, at least that's when I start losing the needle in the haystack. I've done that with Erlang and it

I used to be the opposite. For a good part of my first 10 years as a programmer, I used to always go for the wildest and coolest solution, architecture, language, etc. Coupled with me being a good salesman (able to sell to management) it co

Because everything is bound to power and not to morals or law. The latter two are only sometimes and to a varying extent hurdles to the first. This is true in every social and political climate. Socialism doesn't make it better (actual

The price comparison reads like a joke from my $500 a month, 2 bedroom, nice neighbourhood apartment in Sofia, Bulgaria. Also, probably saving more money than I would in Switzerland. "If you are a Software Developer living in Europe th

It's only because the events got out of hand, not because of the action per se. The same person has been doing this for many more cases where it was just fine and this is perfectly clear by the tone of the CTO.

One of my goals in life is to never be susceptible to this kind of situation (been there some years ago). So far I manage to have as big a financial buffer as needed to be able to quit instantly in that situation without batting an eye. Ind

I disagree. My iPhone 7 usually takes better shots than my Canon 800D unless I actually put my photography knowledge to work. I'm scared. It's just better at calculating exposure, aperture and ISO sensitivity than the DSLR. And do

After one year of OCaml/ReasonML and after that one year of TypeScript, I will not go back to Reason. 1. TypeScript has a better (more practical) type system (for the task of writing a WEB UI and interop with JS). 2. TypeScript is actu
