> One is that your page should work without javascript Universal rendering would send straight HTML with inline styles to the browser. And plenty of web applications need JS to function properly.

React encourages declarative usage. You declare some data and how it will be rendered in JSX templates, and React does its thing. As a consumer of a library I shouldn't have to care about what goes on under the hood, as long as I know

I agree that people should think about the proper tool for the job. And that hype can lead to poor decisions.

You're not converting between data structures in your example, you're mutating a stateful system. Moreover, I'd rather leverage a library so that I don't have to manually do everything myself.

I've found it cleaner and easier to track changes to your model data and let the view be a declarative representation of said model. YMMV though. I'd much rather punt the ball into a stadium with some properties/parameters th

What about a fixed standing desk with a drafting chair? I have a Conset 501-27 legs with a custom top, and it's been great. [0] Last I looked, hand crank desks weren't much cheaper than the motorized ones. [0]: http://ww

That solution just punts the ball down the field a bit. You still have to figure out who called setUserName to mutate the DOM.

Just keep in mind that object spread operators are a TC39 stage 1 proposal at this point.

I was expecting something very different from the word "koans". IMO, "React.js exercises" would be a better title for the project.

I haven't seen a cross-platform IRC client that is as nice as Slack. The embeds and integrations are nice and I like being able to edit typos. Having seamless integration between my desktop, phone, and tablet is great.

IIRC, it's just the dBs/time and not headphones specifically that contribute to hearing loss. If your ear drums are getting 100 dBs from speakers or 100 dBs from headphones, it should cause the same amount of damage over the same

Pairing git-config's include directives with a separate semver-tagged repo for your Git code sounds reasonable. I guess what I was getting at here is that I haven't come across a good analog to npm for shell scripts or dotfiles &q

Your .bash_profile functions probably aren't exposed to others via a package manager. They're probably not available in a repo for others to contribute to either. Yes, node/npm are required, but most of the servers I work wit

The policy prevents submitter editorializing. It's a good blanket policy, but I think this should be one of the exceptions. Edit: Now the article has the title "Newsletter #4 - Thanksvimming Day". MODS, ASSEMBLE!!

> React is just for the view (think jQuery) That is comparing apples to oranges. I agree that React is a view layer, but jQuery is most definitely not. The only thing they have in common is that they (usually) act on the DOM in some way.

Agreed, which is too bad. It's one thing to not contribute to a project if the source isn't to your liking, but it's another to flat out not use the compiled version. Besides, I've found that writing CoffeeScript is pret
