Sense of smell is fascinating. I remember reading that there are dozens (hundreds?) of these distinct receptors and each has a different response curve for a given substance. So you end up with a huge multi dimensional space, which explains

That doesn’t seem right. It’s mostly the bus drivers, police and firefighter unions and the like who came out against vaccine mandates in large numbers. Your typical tech worker is happy with office-mandated vaccine and masks.

True spinlocks in user space are rarely a good idea. You would use a spinlock in the first place because you assume that the critical section is short, but the kernel often gets in the way of that assumption. The thread in the critical sect

It seems that a society where trains run on time with amazing precision has to also be a society where you get berated if you’re a few minutes late for work.

Reading the email in question ( https://newbostonpost.com/2020/06/19/heres-what-the-m-i-t-ca... ), it really seems like he was attempting to bring together the two camps. At the time the talking point of “oh, h

I think there are different flavors of Stoicism chiefly differentiated by the social status of the person practicing it. The wealthy and the powerful don’t have to deal with systemic oppression, only their own emotions and consequences of p

Depends on what you consider a “joke” I guess. In my view 2 months in jail over this seems excessive: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-birmingham-58738771

You hit the nail on the head. Any other study which is nothing but a few dozen people surveyed about how an intervention X made them feel, with the results split would barely register on HN. Yet if X = Instagram use it’s suddenly this huge

Yeah that’s how I imagine it would have to be done (scene capture from many angles + 3d scene recreation) but I disagree on “that’s never going to work”. The number of everyday things that people in say 1950s would think were “never going t

What dystopian doomsayers get wrong is the axiom that things must always get worse. In reality the pendulum tends to swing. WW1 was a horrible period for free speech in the US, but this was relaxed over the following decades.

As I understand it, modern flat earth stuff borders on outright religious belief (with a dose of antisemitism and conspiracy theories - a lot of qanon is just flat earth rebranded), so convincing someone like that with physics is like tryin

Also reminds me of all the skepticism surrounding the iPhone launch. I remember those joke ad spoofs making fun of the actual phone feature. Yet here we are and who uses actual voice calls anymore?

That makes way more sense too. Human brains are pretty complex devices, it’s easy to believe the machines didn’t figure out how to make something comparable and opted for human farming instead. On the other hand humans make very crappy bat

If my reading of the bill is correct, it would expose any SaaS website to liability. What does Gmail do if not promoting content that’s specific to an individual?

The proposed bill would not make this distinction though. Both of these would fall under the “personalized recommendation” umbrella, and so would Gmail and a ton of other services.

This is a good write up on the perils of messing with a fine-tuned mechanism that is Section 230 and potential devastating effects it could have on the internet as we know it. If not carefully drafted, any such bill will open up internet co

There are clearly advantages when working for someone else. Is the negotiation between the employee and the employer always fair when an industry has a few established incumbents? That depends and there’s a large spectrum of possibilities.

It’s completely fair and it’s also not quite what people who critique capitalism are talking about. Imagine you’re hiring a company that has electricians on payroll, then by definition the electrician you hired will get less than the labor
