Well yeah that’s the idea. Things like “never being contacted after hours” only work if everyone agrees to it. If there are a few people on the team who “defect” by getting work flexibility and start pinging people at night, the whole cultu

There are things beyond compensation that individuals cannot easily negotiate by themselves. For example, a reasonable ask could be to never get contacted by boss or work colleagues (about work) outside of work hours (unless oncall, etc.).

Meta-comment: I recently got into RSS so I’m pretty biased but I love the format and it seems like there’s a bit of a RSS renaissance going on with a bunch of recent articles promoting it and people sharing their experiences etc. Is that j

I just recently got into RSS and was pleasantly surprised to see that virtually all websites I regularly read provide it.

It also needs to get as close as possible to the top of the hill without going over. L2 is not a stable point: you’re either falling back to Earth or drifting away. If it goes over it can never get back as it can only fire in one direction

Another example is a small single engine airplane. The engine can be considered a single point of failure but if you zoom in it’s a complex system with many redundant components (multiple cylinders, multiple spark plugs per cylinder, etc.)

I thought in this context it’s pretty much irrelevant what Western countries do now - the ball is in China’s court. We can all stop driving and flying tomorrow and it won’t make a difference.

There’s some evidence that most “long covid” symptoms (everything except loss of smell) in most people who claim to have it are not due to covid: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2787741 Spec

It is the same style isn’t it. The unintended hilarity is due to the fact that Marcus Aurelius was writing a diary addressed to himself (admonishing himself to do this and that) while this blog post is meant as serious advice for public con

Some part mutation, some part immunization so that future infections are milder. In the absence of perfect vaccination this involves killing millions of people. Let’s not forget about this.

Seems that we don’t have much choice in the matter so we will find out pretty soon. That wouldn’t be the worst outcome.

Omicron didn’t kill 800 000 people. There’s also vastly more immunity (whether through vaccines or previous infections). Let’s wait and see but there’s hope it’s a different, milder disease.

While tools like these are useful, I flirted with the whole FIRE mythology but found it more harmful than inspirational. If you start seeing everything in this utilitarian monetary way it poisons everything. The work to get to the FIRE poin

Do you not build any artillery weapons in fear that your enemy will take it and use it against you? That might very well be a bad idea if you’re already under a siege and are losing. I guess it’s hard to make a general statement that applie

What prevents the next government from setting this up anyway? If your threat model is “the other side getting elected is inevitable but we can’t ever let them control what the government does” you’ve already lost. It’s cliche to bring up H

Legally yes but large companies generally have rules in place that go beyond legal requirements. One of those rules could be “you can’t fire someone for performance reasons without putting them on a PIP first and documenting why it failed”.

Fact checking is a fig leaf that allows you to apply further content decisions. You can’t just stop promoting or ban a piece of content outright without some ground rules; a “fact check” acts as a filter that enables you to do so. It doesn’

Historically huge swings in climate did occur, they also often coincided with catastrophic extinction events. Forgive me for not caring that the warmer Earth is newly “in balance” for whatever heat-loving species emerge.

It would make for a better discussion if you stated plainly why you think your link is interesting. Wikileaks is a hot button issue in some circles and just giving a link like this without context will raise some eyebrows.
