That's a pity. I just bought a new ThinkPad and there was no way to get it without Windows. It runs Xubuntu now and it's really snappy. I'd be happy to give away or sell the unwanted Windows license.

Obviously, not everyone here is on the same page, but there is a general consensus that patent laws are being used to suppress rather encourage innovation. Apple's suits against Samsung are an egregious recent example of the patent system

I can understand that Wayland does not want to pay for the complexity of network transparency, but I'd be sorry to see it go entirely. I'm one of the few people who do make use if X11's network transparency on a regular basis. Being able

Yes, the audio quality of mp3s is much lower than a CD. This format will never catch on.

This worries me as a customer. As a consumer, having access to other interfaces, even if I'm not using them, seems like better value than however Netflix thinks they can monetize their customers' viewing data. If they do find some other i

I really hope they manage to find someone with mixed African/Asian ancestry to play Hiro instead of whitewashing the character. It's not exactly a plot point, but it did give a sense that Protagonist was born ahead of his time.

Google limited the appeal of G+ early on when they started enforcing their real name policy. Throwing out users when you're trying to expand the user base turned out to be counterproductive. But the policy seems more misguided than intent

Nokia had alternate operating system and they abandoned it. Maemo was well liked by the people who used it. It seems Nokia decided to board another company's burning ship. It's a shame to see all that engineering talent go to waste.

I don't see any indication whether this device will have a touch capacitive screen. If this is going to use the trackpad instead, it's going make a significant difference for usability, especially for apps that were designed for touchscree

From Andy Ihnatko's blog: But — umm — the release date is only, like, two or three weeks away. Two or three weeks away would fine. Two or three months would be okay too. GoT season 1 finished airing in June 2011, and didn't come until o

Moral priorities will always be subjective. There isn't much sense to prepending "I think" to a sentence when it's implied by the context. Being tolerant doesn't mean that one cannot be critical.

And it makes it much harder for HP to attract or hold on to top talent. The perception that it's a sinking ship is self-reenforcing. WebOS seemed to get a lot of positive reviews. Maybe there's a place left for it, but it seems unlikely a

I agree, there's too much invested in Dalvik as a Java environment for Google to throw that out, however the Oracle lawsuit works out. I wonder how feasible it would be to make Dalvik run Go the way it runs Java. If it runs reasonably wel

I'm happy with the existing GMail UI, and the fact that people are experimenting with custom modifications is a good thing. It's disturbing though, that the first improvement touted is the removal of ads. For a free service offered by an

The frustration isn't that HBO is demanding money for content. Many of us would happily pay for episodes of GoT as they're released, or even signing up for HBO online and paying a monthly fee. What I won't consider is a cable subscription,

Chrome and the old Android browser are both based on WebKit. Google will almost certainly make Chrome the default browser for new editions of Android, and will likely push for it on IOS and Windows phone.

You don't seem to have a good understanding on the difference between what is permitted and what is discouraged. Questioning of all science is encouraged. Blind denialism is discouraged because it is idiotic, but permitted.
