I’ve had discussions with people working in ads at Google that are basically, “so GDPR is the EU’s attempt to kill off all our competition and presently entrench us in the marketplace.”

While I sometimes feel a lot of these things, I don't think you are diagnosing the cause correctly. I don't see how the fact that we have a single dominate social networks, and search engine are the cause. I can't imagine h

The article isn't actually specific on this. They mention death threats but don't quote any. (I'm betting Mr Filardi didn't keep a scrapbook of death threats, and with his facebook account gone the record is gone too.)

Why should we expect an online forum to be free of racism if oral forum of speech isn't. As another poster pointed out in a way the fact that racism is obvious in these platforms is an improvement over it hiding in plain sight.

I'm confused by your comment are you saying diffrent rules should apply to Google vs other companies or are you saying Google lack the engineering talent to comply and everyone else has it. The former is a deeply troubling form of gove

That is an awesome idea! I really like it, one thing I do know if you dig in the the ad settings for most provides you can find a page where they display this info and you can edit it. Unfortunately short of some type of mandate I don'

This was/is unclear, I actually remembering having an hour long discussions about this exact topic several months ago. This is the biggest problem with the GDPR it was hard to understand what could and could not be done.

Native ads don't do this unless you mean something other than the standard definition. Native ad is just an ad that is formatted so it fits with the aesthetic style of the page, (for example it uses the same fonts and colors). This mak

My understanding is that Facebook doesn’t actually sell data to advertisers. By this I mean you can’t go to Facebook and say, “I would like to buy data for 10,000 18-24 year old males in New York City, how much?” Instead you say, “I have

An interesting if rather long read. However I’m not sure if your solutions of voluntary donations and cryptocurincies have viability. Voluntary donations have high friction to get a user to start donating (You don’t want to donate to a si

That sounds like an explicit HIPA violation and is very much against the law for both the hospital to share the data and Facebook to do that linking. It sounds tin foil hat conspiracy to me.

To do what? Facebook uses user data to, run Facebook, do research (train machine learning which uses de personalized data), and show ads. If they aren’t showing ads what other things are you expecting them to do that you find problematic.

Obviously not, the point is if you are poor and want to know if someone has a history of scamming people do you want to not eat this week and be a formal background check, or run a quick google search and not worry about where to find food.
