You're trivializing search. DDG only works because for the hard stuff it's grandfathered into an old Bing API. DDG is small and scrappy but it's built on the shoulders of a giant investing billions of dollars.

Nah, I think this might look worse than it is to "always online" types. And sure, it might be the death knell for Twitter and reddit. But it fortunately has zero impact on face to face interactions. I guess the 90s, before social

Oh, ha, you're right! I read this post and thought, "wow, so cool!". But after reading your comment I checked my own GitHub profile and sure enough, I have it, too!

Very interesting! Thanks so much for sharing. I have a couple questions: 1) The `bump` function interacts with the worker GenServers via `send(pid, :bump)` and the GenServer has a `handle_info` for that. I would normally add a client functi

When I read the output of this model I'm really quite impressed. However, given the sheer size of it and huge training corpus, to what extent is it just regurgitating source text?

RIP. I think I was one of the last years to take this wonderful class. I guess it would have been in 2004 or 2005, since I took it as an elective (being an Econ major) on the strength of its reputation. It was hard but so interesting! Since

It can, but then so can ruby's Bundler and elixir's Hex. But neither of them have the same issues as npm. I think npm's issues arise from a culture of making lots and lots of tiny dependencies, probably spawned by JS's a

Yeah, I agree with this. I see it kind of like Go's lack of generics, in a strange way. With Go, no one was explicitly "anti-generics", it's just the core team couldn't find a design they liked, and as time went on

Is it worth trying to move my friends from WhatsApp to Signal? As I understand it, they're both e2e encrypted. I'm also trying to move my chats from SMS and Gchat to something encrypted, but am torn between WhatsApp and Signal. Th

I don't think you're modeling the cop very well. They're not going to be in a state to reason or debate with you, and the statement "for your protection" if not paid close attention to sounds vaguely like a threat.

Very interesting post. I actually have been feeling almost the opposite lately. My work laptop is a 2017 MacBook Pro, and a couple months ago I dusted off my old personal laptop, a Mid-2013 MacBook Air to work on a side project. The thing t

I know pcwalton has been banging the "just use threads" drum for a while now. Rust used to use a green thread approach, but if I recall correctly, they ripped all that out for just native threads with the idea that in most cases
