Here's the official reminder not to use the BEAM for all things - http://erlang.org/faq/introduction.html#idp32557584

You, uh, realize that's not actually preemptive right? Like, having to thread in checks, that are cooperative, is by definition not preemptive?
1443.
by lostcolony 6y ago
Uh...no. A safepoint is when all threads in the JVM have blocked (which is purely cooperative, and happens during thread transitions), and, importantly, when OS threads running native code still are running , but can't return/res

The article mentions "The JVM allows you to change the code while the program is running." However, that's not quite the same thing. The JVM allows you to change instructions, but not -data-. That is, in between versions you

You are correct. It's actually worse than that; as I recall, the internal numerical representations of numbers do not necessarily map to the CPU's (for instance, there is no byte sizing; you have integers and floats, and they can

Not to mention background updating. I don't even know when Chrome has updated half the time, unless something stops working.

You're kidding right? You look at every commit of every open source app you use, or that a closed source app is built atop? For me, off the top of my head, that would mean, yes, Chrome, Firefox, the Linux Kernel, Libre Office, Android,

No, not understanding your vendor's pricing is a very separate issue. I'd imagine had they gone multi-cloud they'd regret it even more.
1451.
by lostcolony 7y ago
Their profits are growing...their pricing isn't. AWS has yet to increase the price of any resource; they've only ever lowered them.
1452.
by lostcolony 7y ago
That's what I mean. I recognize it can be an issue later on, and then you deal with it...I've yet to see the case where it was worth worrying about up front, even in hindsight. I also haven't seen the reverse, the multi-cloud

I want to know who has actually accepted a cloud vendor's lockin...and then regretted it, had to change, and wished they'd done it up front. I have yet to meet them.

"Non-deterministic" totally works, but it's not necessarily a bug or even a code smell even if deterministic inputs lead to non-deterministic results. The order a series of parallel network calls returns is non-deterministic,

I've had no issues with it in enterprise systems. Note that it doesn't mean you can't use a framework...it just means prioritizing ones that feel more like libraries, and minimize their surface area. I've worked in a sho

Depends on the area. The national median doesn't really give you insight into whether someone is middle class or not. I'd also point out it's 15% higher than the median. How small do you feel the middle class is? You mentione
