I get much higher battery life out of my X1 Carbon 2017 (with the 1080p screen) and its 57Wh battery, to the point where I configured it not to charge above 90% to improve battery longevity (tlp can set charging limits on Linux). But withou

I don’t have the device at hand but I’m pretty sure it’s a Validity Sensor 138a:0097. There’s an effort to reverse engineer the Windows drivers for this class of fingerprint sensors at https://github.com/nmikhailov/Vali

Yeah, I bought mine without Windows. It’s a special SKU for edu users. Great discount vs regular price and no Windows included :)

Yup, but apply the same thought to sailing boats and the GP’s point stands. Could be great for search & rescue (EPIRB is incredibly slow, this could maybe be used to build an alternative system?), but could also compromise the feeling o

Latency and bandwidth are two separate things, and the distance to an LTE tower has approximately nothing to do with latency to the server you’re connecting to, which btw is likely much further away than 100 miles. Now factor in that light

Maybe not so much for homeowners given the regulatory issues you describe, but combining this with solar panels and a backup battery could be a cool way to provide cell service to sparsely populated areas using satellite backhaul. I wonder

Some old models (X201 or X201s iirc, so around 2011) could be configured without a trackpad. A 12-inch notebook with a 7-row keyboard and trackpoint is fantastic!

You get the hang of it pretty quickly by just using it for a few days. I don’t even have a mouse on my desk at work (Desktop + ThinkPad external keyboard), my hands never have to leave the keyboard’s home row :)

X1 Carbon uses LPDDR3 (as does the MacBook Pro), but the CPUs don’t support more than 16GB of it, so this is kinda Intel’s fault. LPDDR3 uses very little power in standby so both idle power usage and suspend time are improved. For non-LP RA

I run last year’s X1 Carbon and it worked flawlessly with Debian out of the box. Battery life is excellent (3.5W isle with medium brightness) and the only thing that doesn’t work with Linux is the fingerprint scanner. It’s a great device th

I have last year’s X1 Carbon and have had no issues with WiFi (using Debian unstable). Certainly no connection drops. Maybe it’s a bad combination of AP and WiFi module?

You ignore that those advantages require the density of housing provided by the kind of building described by paganel. You can't have low-density housing surrounded by lots of cafés and supermarkets, the economics just don't work

Why are you comparing to a derelict housing block in Russia and cramped living in Kowloon? There is plenty of high-density housing in western cities as well, and it looks nothing like the pictures. How's this, for example: https:

I wholeheartedly agree that many—if not most—algorithms classes don’t sufficiently talk about the limitations of the models used and how to handle this. I’m a big fan of Algorithm Engineering, which is best imagined as a cycle of design, an

In some German cities you can email the police a photo along with a description when and where the infraction took place and they will issue a ticket. In other cities you might have to mail it the old-fashioned way.

While not exactly the simplest tool around, org mode is still a lot simpler than LaTeX and brings excellent export features to both LaTeX/pdf and html. It’s probably a hard sell for anyone who doesn’t use Emacs already, but for someone
