To me, the sin of Java has been to make String final. Or, to be more precise, not to have made it generifiable. (So the compiler knew the difference between, let's say, String<FirstName> and String<LastName>)

Is there an economical value to that? It will predate a lot of good lands for non-producting results. And probably require some human management. Who will pay for that?

I have spent ages understanding this. And I am super happy that what you summarize is the mental model I have made up.

Same here. Still thinking about this Nietzsche quote: “It is my ambition to say in ten sentences what others say in a whole book.” [That I consider a valid explanation of why Twitter is so damn great!... [1]] [1]: ... once you have curated

As far as I know, iOS updates are downloaded as soon as available and if you are on WiFI. And then you decide if and when you want to apply it. Can anyone confirm that behaviour?

The mantra of the Real World (aka non-technical persons): CSV is an acceptable serialization format for whatever data structure you deal with. (and the corollary: any data can be authored or visualized in Excel).

What would happen if the Rust core team decided to parametrize String? Would it work with legacy code? (that creates something like String<?> and consume String<?>).

From that perspective, there will be a strong need for various rare earth elements. Leading to an insane amount of pollution. Are there any breakthroughs in rare earth extraction & treatment process?

Let's consider hydrogen cars are the next big thing. Is it a good move to go massively towards electric cars? Especially regarding batteries that will have to be massively replaced in 2 years?

As far as i understand, Rust is strongly typed, has generics and no type erasure. I also suppose String is some kind of a primitive type. Could it be possible to make it parametrizable, so we can manipulate a String<FirstName> as a St

I have heard about Rust. But I wonder if you can do something that a OO programmer (like me :) would call "string subclasses" so you do not manipulate a generic type called string, but a meaningful subclass such as "FirstName
