I saw some video of the inside of the crew console for the SpaceX capsule. It's all touch screens as far as I can tell. That seems to me to be incredibly stupid. I'm sure it'll be very easy to access those controls when it&#x

This may be a meme, but it's also very true (like all good comedy). It's truly represents how you start to look at Lisp code after a while: https://www.thejach.com/imgs/lisp_parens.png

With a standard connector one can have standardised power bricks too, which may eventually lead to no need for power bricks at all.

Apple had engineers on the design team, but it's definitely not their invention. Even an Apple-focused publication agrees with that: https://9to5mac.com/2015/03/14/apple-invent-usb-type-c/

I'd much rather see languages take advantage of characters outside of ASCII. There are already symbols such as ⇒ which could be used by a language. This is a nice feature of APL, and the derivatives such as J which use plain ASCII are

One of my applications is distributed through Appimage. It works really well. I really feel it should support containerisation in a similar way as Flatpak does. In my opinion, the idea that any application on your system can can touch all y

The point is that a 64-bit integer is stable in the language I'm using (which is most languages). My opinion is that a serialisation format that explicitly makes something as fundamental as the representation of numbers unspecified is

I agree with what you said about XML. But in its stead we have a lot of JSON which is several respects is even worse. The worst part of it is that it doesn't have a stable definition for numbers, making it impossible to guarantee you&#

Are you sure it was in 1995? I joined Sun in 1997, and the E10k was launched a bit after that. According to Wikipedia it was launched in 1997 so it does line up. If I remember correctly, the system was bought from Cray after SGI bought the

Borderlands 2 is native Linux so there is no need to use Wine. It would be interesting to see the difference in performance between running the native version and the emulated version.

Since none of the McCLIM contributors use Windows, there have been very little work on a Windows backend. One idea has been to use a common low level interface such as SDL to implement a backend, which would then be very easy to get to work

If you run everything in your Lisp image, on top of McCLIM then you have that experience. I kind of try to illustrate that in the video I linked. Every object is that is displayed is a Lisp object such as the individual parts of Maxima expr

The Apollo Guidance Computer that was used for navigation and other control tasks in the moon missions also used bytecodes. The reason was to save space, as well as not having to constantly update the software as the hardware specs changed.

There is a version on Playstation that's very good. You can switch between the original graphics or updated graphics by simply pressing a button at any time. It plays really well.

Bootloaders are interesting, and the one that impresses me the most is the one for the EDSAC. It's 31 instructions, and implements a relocating assembler that is used to load and assemble the program you want to run on the computer.

So if I understand it correctly, Apple decided to move that complexity to the language itself? I was reading up on the rules for references in Swift, and it looks like a lot of complexity and lots of opportunities for introducing errors lea

But didn't some version of Objective-C use a GC? My understanding was that the reason it didn't work well was because of issues with the language and not the libraries. So they could still have used a GC for Swift?

Why was refcounting chosen? It seems to me it was only done because the designers were so used to C++ that they don't understand the drawbacks of not having it.

Kotlin Native is nice, but its compile times are absolutely horrible. I guess some of this comes from Gradle, which is another mess in itself, but when it takes over half a minute to compile Hello World, there is a problem.
