Another thought: many (most?) of these "rules" were before widespread distributed computing. I don't think Knuth had in mind a loop that is reading from a database at 100ms each time. I've seen people write some really

And if you know in advance that a function will be in the critical path, and it needs to perform some operation on N items, and N will be large, it’s not premature to consider the speed of that loop.

For people who don't follow this, the West Bank has a different government vs Gaza (they are not friends!), and is in fact pretty compliant wrt Israel.

The approach of allowing a limited amount of some "vice" (or otherwise disfavored activity), highly regulated, combined with stiff penalties for illegal use is a pretty common approach to greatly reduce anti-social activity.

I don't think it is a mirror, quite the opposite. I think most Americans (and probably europeans?) think a lot of this is in fact very bad, and should be stopped. The problem is that our lawmakers are not mirroring what the voters wan

I asked my CS peers why they were doing that major since they clearly disliked programming and theory. They all said they would either be a consultant or a manager.

For business it’s almost a simple as adding another factor to your model: the odds of expropriation by the leader and his cronies. It does not take a very high number to make most capital investments look really bad. And you compare that (i

The use of GDP, or GDP/Population as the primary metric is a real problem. We need to use a metric that is closer to "total economic benefit for the median person", that would include income, as well as government services.

You should not have the root account be a human anyway. Make that a special account, secure the credentials and only ever use them when you screw something up really badly.
