Yeah, there would be none without government support. Remember when everyone was contributing spare dimes to fund a vaccine?

Unfortunately that is a group metric, we need individual metrics

The whole phenomenon of metric based Eng evaluations is because leadership does not trust line managers to evaluate individual engineers.

I worked somewhere that made time from PR being sent for review and ready to merge be a metric for the reviewers. Not time to add feedback in each round. Total time elapsed. Insanity

My understanding is that vaccine research and production is almost never profitable and depends on government support. Either grants, guaranteed purchases, or both.

They did all the normal steps in the US. It was faster because they had the full attention of the FDA (so zero admin delays), and they did some parts in parallel, risking wasting money if things did not work out. The mRNA approach already

I think OSS maintainers are in the middle of intersecting trends: - tough hiring market, especially for more Jr candidates - the perception (true or not) that OSS contributions help get attention from recruiters - LLMs making it very easy t

It’s just a social thing. Two identically bad submissions have different social contexts.

I have spent many years reviewing and editing design and product documentation from more Jr engineers and product managers. It was a constant struggle to get them to be concise, one I mostly lost.

I agree with the broad point. But it ignores another key requirement: it can’t be easy to “loan” your proof of age to someone else.

There have been a few highly publicized situations where the pack gets damaged (road damage), and is not covered. The replacement is more the new car. I think it’s overblown. A combination of it all just being new and getting figured out,

I have an iX, the predecessor for these. The freeway automatic mode works well, that’s all I really want.

How do the apps bootstrap identity? Do they just use Apple/google (that seems really bad), or do they have you do some verification and input a token into the app somehow?

I understand, but then you know the real identity of the person requesting the take down, which was an issue in the story here.

Yep. And on some level, if that’s what these people want, fine. I disagree, but I don’t live there. I do live in CA, and I’m happy the state is pushing back, and this is not a purely local issue. What really bothers me is the dishonesty.

I bring it up with some people. To do this you need to either accept: - the area becomes an enclave for the wealthy with a high unhoused population, where most youth have to move away. People say they don't want this, I’m not sure th

Even today the structure is a declining asset. It’s just that bad land use policy has forced land value up enough to overwhelm that.

I always find it odd that stories like this focus on non-Eng roles. I know it’s not universal, but IME it was very common for new CS grads to make much then what is discussed here, and far more after a few years. And this was before COVID

If we are going to allow elites to gather vast fortunes avoiding fair tax, and then use that wealth to exercise outsized influence on politics, it’s fair for consumers to factor this into how they spend their money.

You could also require a signed letter that has been properly notarized. Again, adds an independent 3rd party with a verified identity and something to loose. And falsifying is a crime.

The WTO was a mistake. We should return to a GATT style trade policy where free trade is allowed (mostly) between open democratic nations with aligned security interests and goals.
