"The lady doth protest too much, methinks" If the majority of your article is spent saying "no, really! We're still relevant, I promise!" then you should take a step back and decide if the group you spend all your time with is bias'ing you

All I can think to say is: why? It looks so amateurish, not well thought out (e.g. $null) and inconsistant I can't think of any reason to use it. If you want a dynamic language, Clojure is superior in every way and created by an extremely

Dynamic scope is fantastic and I dislike using any language that doesn't have it. That said, I find it annoying in emacs to write code that uses menus because what I would like to do is build the menu and attatch a closure to the differe

Agreed. This is something I dislike about Haskell. After seeing the regex class and it tons of contexts I was just thinking "didn't they learn anything from perl?".

I understand what you're saying, but I'm not sure it will play out exactly that way. So many movies/songs were being copied that some people were speculating that no one would be willing to pay for movies/songs at some point. Then iTunes c

I know they're not singling me out, but I personally think rewarding ignorant behavior (to the cost of educated behavior!) is a bad strategy. Ideally, they would have a button that says "not your language? Click here to set the language an

I don't mean to paint a doomsday scenario, I know that if google turns evil we'll find a way to break out of it. It's just that in my opinion MS' lock in set the computer industry back at least 10 years. I think we could have a lot more ad

Web sites need to just look at what your browser says is the prefered language. Google still shows me german because I'm in a german speaking country even though my settings are english. Drives me mad.

Fair point. "financially independant" wasn't the proper phrase. I meant being able to have a good middle class, or better life without punching a clock for someone else. I resist anything that would mean our only asperations can be (a) b

I didn't figure you would find it ridiculous, but I think looking at the expectations most people have of devices that are just as much computers but don't look as much like computers is instructive. I'm sure (a) would be feasible in the

I certainly hope you're wrong. Writing software is one of the few things left that a normal working person can get into and become financially independant. Personally I expect to just see the prices of software to come down on Mac and Wind

You're welcome to your opinion. Just as, on a public forum, I'm welcome to critique it. Do you see it as rediculous to say "I'd like the ability to install arbitrary things on my d-link router"? Of course you could say "I should be able t

Why do you only value invention? Why not innovation (taking something you've seen and making it better)? Personally I'm very good at the second and not very good at the first. Do I deserve to be poor or always slaving away for little pay

You're asking for it to just be a computer again with a different interface. We've known for a while that the next big thing in technology would be when we moved away from this model and started making appliances, etc. There is no reason f

Personally I'm glad that Apple ignores people like you and hope the trend continues. Hackers (a kind of slang word for "producers") already have a capible device. It's called a desktop computer. Everyone else is mostly a consumer . App
