I lived in a small community / somewhat resort town on Vancouver Island a couple of years ago. Population less than 15000. Typically there would be less than 3-4 residential long term rental units available in the whole town. And ther

I don't disagree. Given the barrier to entry and cost, with little benefit, if I were to guess, the Epic store might be the only "third party App Store" to ever see the light of day. And the way that's going, even that i

Unless I misunderstand, the apps still work? They just can't be updated after 30 days and you can't install new apps from the third party stores.

Ahh, the good ole days. I remember having an IRQ conflict between my 2400 baud modem and my serial connected mouse. I had to keep moving my mouse to use the modem until I changed one of the IRQs.

For 10,200 people it also had the nice feature of erroneously telling them they had to quarantine or risk fines up to $5000 per day. Oops.

Why would that matter in this case? Apple has a 12 month warranty on this and most of their other hardware. Also, I expect most people shelling out $3500 for a headset are going to get AppleCare+ which also covers accidental damage.

Not a consumer router, but the cable modem / gateway provided to me by Shaw Cable (now Rogers) in Canada does not allow me to shut off DHCP or customize the DNS servers it provides DHCP clients. I can and do put it in bridge mode and u

Not just games, iOS App Store revenue is far higher in pretty much all categories vs Android.

I must say, I am very happy with my 16" M3 MacBook and iPhone 13. The new 16" MacBooks are the nicest laptops I've used since the old 17" MacBooks. I guess enjoying quality products makes me an idiot to some people. I

I think you mistyped the URL - this is Hacker News, not Slashdot. Let's keep the discussion intelligent and not bother with the mud slinging or other insults. An interesting observation is that users of Apple products rarely go out of

What are these new roadblocks? From a North American perspective, the only thing I can think of that has changed is Google now requiring DUNS numbers for business accounts (while Apple has required them for a very long time, for business ac

Apple used to push web apps pretty hard. E.g. if I recall correctly, in the early days of the App Store, the guidelines were that if your app could easily be a web app, it should be, and you could have your app submission rejected for that

Regardless of these changes or the pricing, I expect there will be very very few third party app stores created. For a simple reason: Most iOS users don't want it and won't use them. If your app isn't available in the main

Indeed, "Guidelines" is also how Apple refers to them. For good or bad, they are flexible - and that is frustrating at times trying to get Apps approved. https://developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guide

I used to upgrade my MacBook every year. I'm not sure if this is still true, but I found the resale value great enough that it was almost the same cost over time to upgrade annually vs every 3-4 years. Of course if you're only upg

Right. But there have been changes in the Android API that have been non-backwards compatible and if your app is using those API's, they will break when run on newer versions. Same as for iOS. Many simple apps targeting very old versi

Google is worse, in my opinion. "Currently, existing apps (across mobile, Android Auto, Android TV) must target API level 31 or above by August 31, 2023 (target API 30 or up API level 33 for Wear OS). Otherwise, they will stop being di
