To your implied question about Linux on a Chromebook - you can skip all that Crouton stuff if you flash a special bios. I've got Ubuntu Server with Xmonad on mine as a daily driver and it's been a smooth experience.

I think OP's idea was that developers in most fields are very infrequently treading new ground when it comes to solving programming problems. Your business idea is where you'll likely be innovating - trying to use X language/

As someone dealing with an extruding disc right now I hope they heal. In all seriousness, my research and speaking with specialists is that bulging or extruding disc do have blood flow and they will eventually reabsorb. Even sequestered d

This is a great point, and a sword I fell on at my previous employer. React is great for stateful web apps - a blog or a news site have some state, but aren't really that state heavy. Especially when you have a news site getting millio

I wouldn't argue that it's the second coming of Jesus, but it's been pleasant to work in. React creates HTML from JavaScript, and JSX is a convenient, intuitive, and familiar way to express your code. I've found that R

Yes. My understanding from conversations with those in the know, and our limited testing at AMP launch, is that you treat the CDN as a proxy. All the downsides of losing visibility to your domain and none of the upside from offloading traff

Current models ingest new data from a variety of sources, including surface observations, buoys, airplanes, and GOES-derived data. The derived data might be more accurate and might be used more extensively going forward - I'm not entir

Completely agree. The value of being able to compare individual parameters across models over time, especially with an NWS forecast overlaid is tremendous. If anyone is interested, IEM has a site that is rather easy to use once you find you

This is a great visualization of free data, although not the first in this style, but it's usefulness in actual forecasting or nowcasting is rather limited. Interpolation between sparse grid points can result in missing fine details, l

The AMP CDN doesn't even really help with caching - when I implemented AMP at launch for some large sites, it was strongly implied that we couldn't expect any reduction in calls to our servers, and we didn't notice any reduct

Even with blue-green deployments and a separate AMP solution, it's unlikely that they did a during-business-hours release just to prevent paywall workarounds for a tiny subset of their pageviews.

I've been fine with 400 and have noticed issues with 1600, so 800 certainly seems like a good place to draw the line from my experience.

This is completely incorrect - the 810 is tested at somewhere shy of 15 stops DR. Portra 400 can squeak out 18. A slow B+W film can do 20-21. I spent years struggling with high dynamic range/contrast acutance with severe weather photog

Current APS sensor technology is around 15 stops of dynamic range and 50MP. 4x5 sheets of Portra can resolve 100-300MP with 18 stops of dynamic range. Digital has beaten 135 film, but it still hasn't beaten 120 / medium format in

Correction: 35mm is grainier, not noisier. After staring at grain vs color noise in shadows for hours at a time, the aesthetics of grain are one of the reasons I still shoot film sometimes.

This isn't in line what what others photographers (including myself) see. Many respectable sources estimate 35mm to approach 24MP in the best conditions with specific film, 120 to be in the 40-80MP range, and 4x5 to be 100-300MP. Tim P

It's not that, because classic film lenses are used on digital mirror less cameras rather routinely. Film has a pleasing, gradual acutance compared to digital - especially in high contrast areas. Edit: but you are correct that chromati

As a developer working on a site with thousands of concurrent connections that recently went to production with RC1 and is implementing back-end applications as well, I've been looking forward to RC2. All this talk that .NET Core will
