I don't disagree with you on that component of it existing. The thing about policy is usually somebody big is warning the public ahead of time that the "affordable healthcare bill" (for another example) isn't actually af

Thanks for the links. Why is the phrase "conspiracy theory" used for that though? Sounds like it's a value-judgement free decision from manufacturers to follow the incentives from the policy as we'd predict: way cheaper

It's not about retribution or revenge, but costs (which are way beyond just monetary). That's also why it's not up to the wronged personally to decide, but the State (the process; but other people, their peers). If the victim

Where is Xah Lee when you need him? His critiques of Emacs on this are spot on, imo. Helps that he backs up his claims (scattered around his site) with data and usability research. "If emacs just use standard keys for open close save,

Luckily developers tolerate less from other developers (sans Electron, whose existence IMO is justifiably owed to abysmal state of Desktop GUI programming). We have a bunch of Go and Rust tooling coming out for JS, for example.

Look at the ROI. Any amount of performance loss users still tolerate equally, or sufficiently close enough, is prone to be optimized away by trading it away for developer productivity. It's a "supply curve" on a graph.

The reason why they have to at least pretend to play by the rules that are supposed to bind them as much as they do is because legitimacy is what keeps people from quitting the game, bringing it to a halt, and starting their own new games.

It can be very helpful to them as a form of regulatory capture, kicking the ladder down. It's why Walmart and Amazon were the biggest corporate supporters of raising minimum wage and getting stricter on Internet sales tax.

Are you saying it makes it easy to maintain patches parallel to the existing software? The difficulty keeping forks up to date (losing maintenance benefits of upstream work) and "re-basing"(?) the custom changes in a clear and cle

Your list of the extreme/woo edges is pretty well-rounded but it's Eurocentric and missing a few famous ones like Aum Shinrikyo, Sabbateans/Frankists, cargo cults, voodoo, etc. Also putting Islam, Catholicism, and LDS in the

Problem is even if your manager's manager understands the value of it, his manager's manager doesn't, so time spent on it is seen as wasteful or "doing nothing" versus duct-taping things together for some poor sap t
