Smalltalk's death had almost nothing to do with the language itself. It died for four reasons: #1 was price, and especially requiring companies to pay royalties on the software they write with your tools, #2 was the epic mismanagement

i think you mean hard-working people with real skills - and copious amounts of luck. America used to be a place where most hardworking people could improve their living standard, now it's a lottery where a small minority do.

Exactly, better than other panama hats for the purpose for which it is used. And I wasn't as KC8ZKF states, comparing hats by one standard and watches by another. You can make a quartz watch that looks and feels exactly like a fine mec

vintage watches, and hand-made hats, will go up in value simply because there are more people with more money than they can find things to spend it on. It's called Asset Price Inflation.

If you get really amazing micro-scale engineering, you can get a watch that is almost as accurate as a quartz watch, for a hell of a lot more money. At least with the hat, it is qualitatively better.

CA has relatively weak laws in this regard and it hasn't hurt their high tech industry one bit. On the other hand, it makes it much easier to start new companies. Strict non-compete laws are a legal barrier that large, lawyer-rich corp

depends on why you want to do this. if you're an engineer in a good job market, you could probably get more money out of your primary job than a side project (obviously there are exceptions). You could, for example, switch jobs, work h

For me the problem with GPL is simpler. I see a nice little library that someone spent two weeks on. It's GPLd. I would like to use that for the project I'm doing at work, which has 40 person-years of effort in it. So I can never

There are some good, reasoned comments here. Java suffered through some unfortunate 'best practices' that tarnished it's reputation. Building is uh, suboptimal, as some have pointed out, but if you're working alone just keep it simple and i
