After about 3 years my washing machine broke - 3 mins on youtube showed me it was likely the carbon brushes - £5 part from ebay. Took 30 mins to fit once they arrived, and I've had to to the do the job twice more, but now approaching 1

I cannot speak for that fridge as I don't know the energy usage. But the sad fact is that often buying a brand new machine will pay for itself in only 2 or 3 years over a 'free' older fridge or freezer (at least here in the U

I believe you - I'm saying do it! A $500 device that would provide an efficiency jump from 60 to 90% would be a big seller - and would mean that billions of people across the world wouldn't need to upgrade their boilers, saving bi

Sounds like a great engineering challenge! I don't know a lot about boilers, but I do know that obstructing the flue in any way risks carbon monoxide poisoning - which may be the reason these things don't (yet?) exist.

Modern gas boilers can extract far more heat from burnt gas than older boilers. https://www.britishgas.co.uk/home-services/boilers-and-heati... Older gas boilers (esp if 40yo) are likely to be less than 60 percent effi

It is hard to know. My old work colleague took great efforts to keep his son from watching any TV, films or cartoons - they did loads of art, listened to music and went to the theatre a little. He was a pretty chill kid when I met him. One

Agree on some points here - in the UK I spend about £300 combined on gas and electricity. But your boiler sounds interesting - if it is 40 years old it will be wildly inefficient compared to boilers from the last few years - on changing our

It is worse than that - it first made the jump to cows when condemned sheep, infected with the similar prion disease 'scrapie', were ground up and fed to cows.

Says a lot that we treat theft from a workers wages as 'just contractual' - let's not get the police involved. If that same worker stole from the till?

Wage theft is the largest theft category by value (withheld wages, illegally docked wages, etc.) - and from studies it is carried out pretty universally across the country. Why might that be? Why is it when people think of theft, their firs

I personally count a car driving any distance on a pavement something I don't want to see. If you claim never to have seen that happen, then you must live in a hugely law abiding place. I live in a small town with a pretty old average

Happens all the time the world over, cars regularly mount the pavement to pass other traffic, or just to take a sneaking shortcut - search on youtube if you have been lucky enough to miss this yourself. First search result: https:/&#x

I can only assume that you are not a cyclist? I've just ridden down the road safely and legally and had people shout, swear and swerve their cars at me. Believe me, people ARE angry at cyclists - it might be for the reasons you suggest

I'd argue it is different in that just seeing or talking about cyclists will often draw anger online and in person - most people don't feel the same way about cars or drivers. Getting angry when someone cuts you off is different t

If you've ever been around cars (in a car, as a cyclist or as a pedestrian) and sat and watched them for any period - you'll see a huge number of traffic offenses committed by those in cars - mainly using phones, but also speeding
