Sorry, I think I came across too aggressively. I honestly read your comments as "wouldn't it be nice if Knol did X", and when I went to look at the site it already was doing X, so I had assumed that you were just throwing out comments witho

What I was saying is that for regular Google search I'm pretty sure they use regular web search algorithms. Also, I really think the fixation on Pagerank is quite a devious thing Google has done, because it completely obscures all the other

Er rather, I meant a different selection bias. The one where you selectively remember friends that fit your hypothesis. Also, the thing with quite a few statistics is that the risk is say 1/1000, and I honestly have closer to 50 people who

All well and good, but your sample is usually very small and you as a human being can't handle confounding factors very well. Add on the fact that you are also prone to selection bias...

How about we pretend for a moment that Knol is actually publicly visible. Now what are the ways that you would find a Knol article? I imagine you find pages via searching on Google or on the site. Searching on Google probably is just the re

I think you are misunderstanding me. Not every hour in the day is worth $30/hr. In fact, I am paid a salary and thus the more I work the less my hourly wage! What I'm saying is that on the weekends for example, it is unlikely I would be abl

I would actually say Django has a very poor HTML escaping facility. (Though, better than Rails, for what that's worth.) I feel like I've used template languages that actually understand XML (or HTML) and thus have context sensitive escape

Yes. Anyone can create an article about anything. The hope is that over time the better article about something will rise to the top and somehow become the article. I swear sometimes Google is run by geeks who read Ayn Rand one day and th

So I asked a Mac user once where his delete key was... and he told me he preferred it as a key combo. This story relates because I think Apple hates people who type. And it also used to hate people who moused too...

I honestly hope that Android will be notable for the kind of ecosystem an open platform provides. I could care less about web browsing on my mobile, the only use I've managed to come up with is reading my RSS feeds while on the toilet, whic

I actually think its more a reinforcement of the "Windows can do anything" manta. All those "regular" people do all sorts of different and constructive things. One thing that really amused me is how charity-friendly the ads seemed. It reall

Actually, I think as company's get bigger, they don't hear the "I am frustrated by X", they see "ohhh we made HOW MUCH this year?" I'm sure that Apple is peopled with nice guys and all, but seriously developers are a drop in the bucket (and

True. I would say the events are not surprising given the way Apple works as a company, but sure, I guess they have a right to complain. I also think they should vote with their dollars too though.

One thing is that often times you also care about the POST vars that got you to that page, so you need to somehow persist that as well, which is harder since you can't get a redirect to POST easily. So the problem is (sometimes) harder than

I'm pretty sure toolbar PR is basically the PR that Google uses for ranking, just lagging by a bit. In addition, I have no idea why people care about PR, because there is quite a bit more to ranking than PR (or else all those PR10 sites wou
