This is probably more a function of the fact that languages change over time, so if a common task is hard to talk about, new forms will appear that make it easier. Programming languages see very little change (and even rarer are ambiguity o

Not a linguist, but I took some classes ;) I think the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is a pretty imperfect fit for the question. Even the weaker form doesn't really gel well. The question seems more do certain modes of thought make you tend to thi

I associate certain activities with certain languages. Food -> Chinese. Programming -> English. At least for me, the language that people usually speak to me in when I do that task or learn that task is usually what sets the languag

Actually, I think the Army came up with it first. I could have sworn they've been prepared for dropping in boxes of servers with power/network hookups into warzones for awhile.

You CAN use apt-get to install ruby packages. But it totally totally sucks. (And as for the Ubuntu thing. I keep around the tarball with the ruby gem source, and have a script that scps, untars, and runs the install script. I have to type i

Doesn't gem install path_to_gem.gem work? (I could have sworn there was something like that.) Though, most of your complaints are very vaild. Also add on that ruby gems LOOOVES to eat all the memory on your machine if at all possible...

AHA! I looked into it a bit, psmtp is actually Postini, which Google bought. I assume they use psmtp for corporate accounts that need better um. something. So blame postini perhaps ;)

I don't know if anyone ever looked at my GPA. (It might be on my resume, and "they" might have filtered resumes with some hard GPA cutoff) It usually came down to my interviews and such I think.

If you like abbrev, try out pabbrev, its even more awesome. (Theres also another predictive abbrevation mode that seems to have better UI, but I had difficulty getting it working in my "I will spend 30 minutes mucking with my .emacs" moment

Okay, I understand your objection, and I think we're going to just have to disagree on that one. I'm actually curious about that psmtp.com thing, I remember setting my mx records to point to something that shouted "yes, I use Google", maybe

I don't understand this objection. I could forward their email to a random gmail user. I could actually be using Google apps for my domain (which I do). There are many many ways for an email to end up in gmail that don't require you to send

But to answer the original question: yes it is just as risky. But because people are all uploading and downloading the same file (if they used the same torrent), bad files are negatively reinforced and good files positively.

Dumb/obvious idea: Generate 7 random numbers, pick the index that had the highest value. (If theres a tie, run it again!) (Note: not guaranteed to terminate.)

Agreed. Though, one caveat: SVN will slow down as it diffes large binary files. I remember reading a developer works article file about this. ( http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-svnbins.htm... thanks Google!) (PS: if I'm mis
