While this is of course sensational all I hear and read supports this. (California department of corrections outspending department of education, etc, etc). I think the problem in most of the western world is more general. We cultured socie

14. I had a ZX81 with 1k of memory. Programmed in "assembler" in Hex with a handwritten sheet of the opcodes. As an aside, it is amazing how we are able to adapt to new technology. I find it quite normal these days to program in Java and Li

You also do not need it in JavaScript. var x = function y() { ... y(); ... } 'y' is only bound within the function and allows the function to refer to itself. I.e. you can have anonymous, recursive functions, which i

Oh please. This is a completely specious argument. (Like Glen Beck saying that national health care necessarily leads to fascism). Of course some things need to be secret for practical reasons. The problem here would be secret nuclear weapo

I tried Chrome (well Chromium) a few months back. I found that apart from startup and (very) Javascript heavy sites most pages actually render slower in Chromium as compared to Firefox (3.5 and 3.6).

Upvoted, not because I agree but because you have a good point (as all upvoting should go anyway). To your point, though, I do not think the government has a general expectation of privacy. On the other hand some of these cables might have

I respectfully disagree. This is my government, working on my behalf, with my money, and I want to know what this government is doing. If public release of this information is damaging to US interest, the answer should not be to suppress th

I went to a 10 day meditation retreat a few years ago. As you can imagine I met a lot of interesting people there. One guy actually was a body builder and vegetarian. He told me that he had problems with being anemic as well. So his docto

As much as I believe that Oracle squandered a unique opportunity to generate a lot of good will without much cost, this is not all bad news. If I read this correctly the jRocket VM will be part of the OpenJDK and hence be open source.

I see your point. Where does it end though? If the government can regulate what I do with my own body when it comes to drugs, why stop there? What about dangerous sports? Dangerous eating habits? Should the governments prescribe a set of "s

Sad day indeed. I never had much interest in pot, but I find the general populations stance w.r.t. to Marijuana irrational. 1. A lot of tax money is wasted in prosecuting non-violent recreational users. 2. Most studies place Marijuana as le

Generally I like the idea. I wonder, though, whether the Mac App Store will eventually become the only way to install apps on a Mac. (I.e. you'd have to jail break your Mac to install alternative apps). This seems far fetched now, but as

Agreed too. The Android is not open unless I can easily modify/recompile/deploy code to it. GPLv3 would fix that, incidentally.

Yes, I could have stated it more friendly: I disagree with Apple's policies so I do not buy their products. On some level I also do not understand why not more people are bothered by Apple.

I will be forever grateful, that my University taught Scheme/Lisp with this book (and others) as introduction to programming. While I have never used Lisp or Scheme in my professional life, that set of undergrad courses more or less defined
