It looks like a nice distributed datastore. I can't tell how fast it is (my guess is 'pretty slow right now'), but it has all the right scaling properties. It works like a hashtable where the keys are distributed onto nodes based on their h

I use Evernote. It OCRs text out of photos I take on my iPhone. I try to take a photo of anything which gave me an idea, and usually looking at the note is enough to trigger the idea again. That text is searchable. I take pictures of whiteb

I use Dvorak on my main keyboard, and qwerty otherwise. You can learn to switch between them. (I'm not sure if everyone can learn to switch, but it's easy for me -- the different feel of the keys on my main keyboard triggers my brain differ

I like the idea. I can't try it under Linux (even though it's .NET based? can it run on Mono?) So I'll just give you a few thoughts. Security? If changes to apps are "instantly propagated to other users", what's to stop me from editing an a

Yes, it's very important to do it the first way! mysqldb has a bunch of Python->MySQL conversions. If you look at the source you can read converters.py -- it can convert lists, strings, numbers, dates and a lot of other types too.

MySQL may be autocommit by default, but I believe the Python DB-API spec (and therefore mysqldb) specifies to turn autocommit off when the connection is opened.

OK, makes sense. If it is triggered from Cmd-Shift-4 then that's good. I might use it. I don't do much development under OS X these days (I use Linux mostly). We also use Mantis for our bugtracker, which kinda blows. We're considering switc

Hey, I like this idea a lot. I feel like your video is focused on the features your product has instead of how it will help me solve my problems. My problem is that it's a pain to take screenshots of a bug I want to report, so my developers

Hello! I agree that there's a lot of stuff we can do without requiring users to give us specific feedback. And we're doing some of it, and we probably will do a lot more in the future. But when I'm looking at a news site, I often find mysel

Well, I changed the title of the post in response to feedback that we were setting the wrong expectations. The old title was "Rate/review -- can it replace HN for you?" I'm still interested in answering that question, but it's not because I

OK, thanks. What I'm understanding from your post is that the front page needs work. Is this accurate -- you didn't see anything you liked on the front? (Edit: I also understood that you want to be able to scan the headlines, and that's som

Whoops, sorry to give you the wrong preconceptions. If you train it by voting a bunch, you can make it give you whatever topics you like, startup news definitely included. If you don't have the patience to train it, I've heard that feedback

Useful feedback - thanks! If you want to quickly skip stuff, the shortcut keys (J and K to go up and down) might be good for you. :) Other than that, we've considered making a condensed view before -- it seems like that might be valuable.

Hey, that's great feedback, thank you! The tabs show you the same story from different sources. Dinosaur Comics appearing twice with the same content is a bug, oops. :) I agree they can be confusing, and I'm trying to figure out the best wa

Hey! We created Newsbrane because we were frustrated with the skew between the popular stuff and the quality stuff on social news sites like this one and Reddit. Easy-to-upvote stuff gets to the top quickly, which is not always what you wan

$300 is _nothing_ if you type for a living and it can save you from chronic wrist pain. I've had my Kinesis for a year. I was suffering from a good amount of pain, especially in my pinkies. It evaporated in about two days once I started usi

Hello - I'd be interested in chatting with you. I'm very interested in systems stuff (programming languages, multicore, etc.), and I also have a startup which might want to take some angel investment soon. lincoln@newsbrane.com is my email.

Correlation doesn't imply causation! This newspaper article seems to take this simple observation and twist it into "don't let the judges ask you questions". As far as I can tell, there's no evidence for this causal relationship.

I use NoScript too, but you can do it in pure CSS and Noscript won't block it: just set a:visited for the link you're interested in to use a certain background image, which will only hit your server if the link is actually visited.

The expected value of doing a startup is high -- I think a little higher than being able to guarantee myself $80K/year. If I work on a startup with 1 cofounder for 5 years and it's got a 10% chance of exiting for $10M, my expectation is rou

I think if Firefox knows you're online, it will hit the server (sending e.g., If-Modified-Since), but if you go offline, it can tell and puts itself in offline mode, where it browses from the cache only. You can do the same experiment just
