Except for the UI Patterns site which does organize techniques by vague user goals, the other sites are too focused on tactics (Oooo, shiny widgets!), and not on UI/usability strategy. A UI strategy needs to start from higher-level questio

If the courses were rigorous enough, then I'm sure the correlation between grades and programming ability would be meaningful and fairly reliable. It's hard to imagine someone doing well at courses like algorithms, statistics, and compiler

"I am serious. And don't call me Shirley." :) Firstly, errors can stem from the "client side." Few software specifications are so precise that solutions can be proven complete and correct. So I don't think an honest programmer has to li

Where and how can one effectively learn the kind of formal reasoning he describes, and that he mentions having taught to college freshmen? Could a knowledgeable HN'er please give follow-up resources? Thanks!

Worth reading just to receive the wisdom of this change of perspective - I'm going to stop calling my errors "bugs": We could, for instance, begin with cleaning up our language by no longer calling a bug a bug but by calling it an error. I

Very interesting points, thank you for the references. Maybe I'm not so much convinced by Wallerstein as appreciative of the expanded perspective (and willingness to question) he provides. In taking a longer view (centuries), he's at leas

Interesting that this was published in January 2008, and likely written before that. Rightly or wrongly, economic globalization's image didn't end that year untarnished. The world's a really complex system, even limited to just the human-s

No shortage of HN "hypotheses" too. :) Hypothesis: Lisp/Python/Haskell/Ruby is the best programming language ever made. Evidence: PG recommends/PG criticizes; Libraries for X available/unavailable; Supports/Omits 1st class functions, etc.

Sounds like what you want is a long-term, subject-oriented (not single tasks), mastery-directed (aiming to build real skill), social learning context and tool. Would that be a fair summary of the high-level requirements?
