So, what's the better business model for a low-level piece of infrastructure like Docker?

Nice writeup! I probably would've kept unplugging my joystick for years. Impressive how good of a job Ghidra's decompiler did on libcef - this is almost on par with HexRays. Chromium is open source, so we can take a look at the so

Protobufs generate readers/writers for various languages (i.e. serialization/deserializiation). gRPC is an RPC framework that uses Protobufs.

Hi! Small tech company that uses k8s here. Much of the complexity is irreducible and has to go somewhere, and it's much better to have it in a single, stateless, well-defined place that's also easy too introspect. I've seen w

The cost is ongoing maintenance of the code base, reponding to security issues and such, not the server hosting.

Logs that can be tied to individual users are PII and very much a liability. Their privacy policy states that IP addresses are anonymized after 9 months and cookies after 18 months[1]. [1]: https://policies.google.com/techno

Not really. The "Software Engineering at Google" book[1] has a whole chapter on it with screenshots. Gerrit, Reviewable and Phabricator are very similar, except that Critique is much more polished. Having used all three, Gerrit wo

Gerrit is configurable and it is common to use it like Critique with blocking comments and LGTMs. It's still a big step up from, say, GitHub PRs, and the UX has improved significantly.

The Linux kernel is a great achievement, but I'm not sure if I'd call it resilient or antifragile. The code base is underdocumented, has no automated tests, and full of security issues waiting to be found. The moment you're

It's quite nice, really. Good enough for us to drop Slack. Google is slowly replacing all their messaging products with this - Hangouts for GSuite customers is going away, and presumably this is why they drop the Voice integration. The

We used to use Jitsi Meet and it worked perfectly for our team meetings, but we kept having issues with 10+ participants, overseas meetings with 100ms+ latency, and whenever Firefox was used. YMMV, one year ago.

The whole point of Gerrit is to keep doing "one logical change per commit", but reviewing them individually. Anecdotally, this results in much higher-quality reviews. You can still group them by "feature" and merge them

Not on Apple devices, but custom operating systems are alive and well on most non-Apple laptops, tablets, phones, servers, or even embedded systems with no signs of it changing. PostmarketOS is a great example.
