What do you mean by 'real UNIX'? OSX is a 'real' UNIX. And in practise, Linux is far more UNIXy than that is. The BSDs are still reasonably popular too. Are they not 'real' UNIX?

We have a similar collection of tests used by one of the societies I was involved with in college, at http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/help/exams/

No, it took 6 months to buy an existing bank. There's at least one group who put in a request in 2008 for a license and is still jumping through hoops.

Surely you could just get an account that doesn't allow an unauthorised overdraft? So if you need one, you need to actually go into the bank and talk to someone (or is this kind of account only common outside the US?)

Seems like we should wait till we have some kind of actual confirmation of whether the UK government is planning on doing something like this before we jump to conclusions. Actual confirmation, not just someone on the internet syaing they

Ishihara tests on your monitor are not going to be accurate. Get them on paper, the colours will be far better.

Except, linux users don't use four platforms on the desktop. They use (nearly entirely) 1. Those use x86-64 are almost entirely clued in enough to grab the correct architecture. And even if they weren't, you could get around this simply by

It doesn't necessarily solve the 'every distribution' thing. And most commercial developers don't support multiple architecture s in the first place.

Yeah. I hear double clicking on an rpm/dpkg is really difficult.

The ports system also doesn't do updates if you're following -stable, which is a really big deal for most people. Plus its SMP support is incredibly poor.

I've never even thought of installing more than one package manager. I package CPAN modules when I need them. If I needed gems, I'd probably do the same thing.

Depends on where you live. It's quite possible to live (albeit, not well) off the welfare state in most of Europe. And even were it not, a particular place of employment can still be left.

Cool as behavioural economics (and santa fey school economics, while we're at is) are, they're not really up to predicting macro economic change yet. Although, it's easy to argue that neither is macroeconomics.

Depends. Krugman's actual economics has been brilliant, for the most part. The problem is no one knows him for his economics. People know him for his New York Times column, and the two are only very tangentially related.

I do a small amount of pen and paper roleplaying, and the odd bit of computer gaming. Mostly though, I'm a political economy nerd. I read a lot of industrial economics, and a pile of political/current affairs stuff. The Phoenix, the Village

No. Creationism is a bad theory because it is inherently unprovable either way, and because people have provided evidence for the alternatives. If you want to provide evidence that 'perl is a bad language' feel free. Of course, you'll be ha

When you're the guy with a B.A. and work experience in ISP call centres, Cisco certs are a handy way of not getting your C.V. thrown out by H.R. drones :-) (Not that I got any in the end, someone who didn't care employed me first. But they

Aye, I'd be the same as RiderOfGiraffes. The "How many generations from immigration" thing won't make any sense for large numbers of HN readers, who are from the UK/IE/Continental Europe. If anything, the question here would be how many gen
