This is true. There is no way to merge contacts (if it auto-adds the same person as two different people), which makes reasonably contact lists frustrating.

Strictly speaking, HPV is a virus which causes cervical cancer (in almost every case), and to a lesser extent other cancers like mouth, anus and penis. I believe (found a nature paper about) that a virus closely linked with diabetes is Coxs

Just to add a little elucidation to the sex-ed thing, the places that don't focus on abstinence as the only technique don't really explain the numbers. That's a 1% chance that after a year of regular sexual intercourse. Which makes the per-

I'm not so sure about internships. There are a lot of technical companies, and a lot of internships. If you go looking, you can find one (especially if you wait until sophomore year or so).

Indeed. This is the point that gold-standard people don't seem to get. Gold is just as arbitrary as anything else. More so, even, because it is absolutely /useless/ in any aspect except as a valuable. It's too soft to do anything with. Furt

Realistically, you should be scared when there is a new /back-end/. The front-end doesn't do much. When they change the rendering engine (which they didn't) or the javascript VM (which they did), then you need to extensively test it.

It is a good idea to have a password written down. You should have told him that it was a /valuable/ piece of paper, that should be kept with other valuable pieces of paper. Good passwords are hard to remember. Good password discipline uses

This reminds me of a rule about relationships. Every (startup|relationship) you start ever will fail. Until one doesn't.

The fact that s/he got 4 upvotes suggests that few people here think he is right. Or few people here even saw his comment. But it has little bearing on whether he actually is.

When someone rants against college, he or she usually includes those things that colleges teach. He or she claims they are impractical, inapplicable, etc. That is pretty much anti-intellectualism summed up. Now, this is not necessary. A ant

Practical questions are boring, mathematically. Engineers get by with the most basic of linear algebra and diffeq. This is boring, mindnumbing mathematics. There are few applications of, say, category theory to real life. So for the most pa

Technically speaking, Scala is also a subset of Java, C# and Python. It may be easier to use in some ways, or have a different methodology, but still fundamentally the same.

There are issues with the livecd. I couldn't get it to boot in modern VMware (they use version 4 or so). I recall having problems booting it on a physical system. Not to dissuade people, but try and research which VMs/hardware it supports /

HN is a /timesink/. It is easy to dump a v. large amount of time there, without a great deal of energy expended. Much like heatsinks, this comes with advantages (less free-unthinking time) and disadvantages (can suck time away).

The other disadvantage is that the other OS (Linux, at least), can steal the good ideas of it's competitors. Take /proc for example. Now, plan9 may have a nicer interface, but it cannot compete on a features-level.

This is intriguing, but not necessarily surprising. People have been rediscovering calculus for ages. It does bring to mind the question of what /else/ has been lost to the ages, and how far ahead we would be right now without it. Like Ramu

It's the itunes model all over again. People want media in easy-to-consume form. They want it easy to browse and get. Most will pay a nominal sum for it. Some will not.

I seem to recall that the reason mercenaries (at least in the US) are viable is because they hire ex-military. So most/all of the expensive training is done. Furthermore, mercenaries are not so good at things like air forces and carrier gro

Smooth sort is better than mergesort, offering in-place sort that approaches O(n) as the data approaches sortedness (lower bound is O(nlogn)). It is, however, very complex to implement.

No, it really isn't. Blacks have been (and to some extent still are) oppressed by the majority. The word "nigger" is an artifact of the oppression. It was used as a weapon against them. Fraternities, however, have never been oppressed. Occa

For all of Hollywood and video games' obsession with head shots, the head is very hard to hit. From what I know, most training is to shoot at the chest, the biggest, most dependable target.

Basically /every/ large-scale industry causes environmental harm. The question is to what extent. The issue with climate change is that this is one of the things we think may have caused mass extinctions. So your number seems to be off by a

This idea that the rich don't pay taxes is somewhat misleading. Yes, certain very very rich people have accountants and tax shelters, but this is not the norm. IIRC, the (income) tax burden is about 40%, this by the top 1%. So a /few/ rich

Understanding category theory would help you understand at a deeper level the idea of a monad, et al. Haskell uses a small subset of the math, IIRC. This is more for mathy people who want to see where it comes from. I'm not sure it would ac

One question is if it is as simple as that. The human genome is immensely complex; much like raw object code (and compacted and self-modifying at that). The number of active genes are far too small for the amount of variation, so maybe she

My dad had a comment about this. When buying hard drives for work (a university), they would switch to whichever one didn't have a large failure. They exhausted the space of the industry reasonably quickly. Just goes to show that for the (r
